I recently bought a beautiful, old S&W 14-4 (8 3/8" barrel) for $300 from a pawn shop. I went to the range yesterday for an extended session (first time) and am I pleased! With my first shot, I hit a golfball-sized rock that was 50 feet away on the berm. And, I keep hitting them for as long as I tried. A few others tried it out and they kept hitting, too. I brought two newbies with me and they were having a ball making a plastic soda bottle bounce around with it. I thought one of them was getting a little cocky when he told me that he was trying to bounce it up and over the hill. But, he did it with this gun. To be honest, he also did it with a TT33.
What a wonderful revolver it is, with that butter smooth trigger and gorgeous purple bluing. With such a long barrel, I figured it might be a little difficult to hold on target but that wasn't the case. The extra weight really minimized the recoil, though.
All in all, it's a great gun. However, it would be a little more comfortable with some nicer grips. Those original square wood ones are a bit blocky in the hand. I'm thinking something rubber, like those on a Model 67.
