Every time I come home from college to visit my parents my older sister and I try and have at least one day set aside where neither of us are working and we have a sister day. Normaly this sister day consists of lunch, a movie and window shoping. Today was different.

My sister wanted to learn how to shoot, so I took her to a range that is about twenty minutes away. I gave her the lecture about the 4 rules and saftey. I went over the parts of the gun and all those good things you tell a first time shooter.

We got to the range and got her some ear and eye protection (I had my own already) and I took her into the range. I shot off the first magazine of ammo so that she could see what it looked like and then let her go at it. I corrected her a couple times on stance and grip, but her hands are smaller than mine and the ammo I had bought had a lot more kick than the stuff I usualy use so she was having trouble. She hit the paper every time but it was all over the place and she was tensing in anticipation of the recoil.

I stopped the shooting and we went back out into the store portion of the range and rented a S&W .38 revolver. It fit her hand a lot better than my S&W 39-2. By the end of the hour we spent at the range she was doing a lot better and now is looking into buying a gun for herself for use as a nightstand gun.

Before we left the range I had her hold a couple of the .38 revolvers that they had for sale and the Ruger SP 101 seemed to fit her hand realy well and she can rent that one next time she goes so she can give it a try. Any suggestions on other makes/modles to try for .38 revolver to fit a smaller hand?

Not sure about revolvers, but my wife faces the "smaller hand" issue. She really likes the feel of a Colt Government .380; most pistols she can only touch the trigger with the tip of her finger. The Colt fits her extra-small hands perfect.

I really think the SP101 will be the perfect one. I'm sure there's plenty of other options, but it's a great firearm that will last a long time.

I'll second the Taurus M85. My sister keeps one and she don't even like to shoot a lot; I've seen her make fist-sized groups at 20' with the hotter HP's (not +P). However, for a house gun, a K-frame S&W may be the better choice and I'd recommend one with a 4" bull barrel.

I've seen the difference a set of Pachmyers can make too. It can be amazing.

For someone who doesn't shoot much and just wants a defensive gun, I certainly cannot fault a revolver. I was thinking that there are single stack 9mm pistols that would fit her hands well like the Kahr P9, but they do require a little more care to insure they work reliably.

Good job. Teaching and helping others learn about guns is a great way to spread knowledge about firearms... which in theory would open the door to less gun restrictions IMO.

ergonomics are a LOT bigger deal than a lot of people figure.

I can't hit crap with a J-frame smith. Even hardly using sights. Just shoots low for me.

I don't even have to think to hit within 6" at 7 yards with a rounded-backstrap M1911A1.

If the gun fits, it is the shiznit.

Ladysmith?

My wife tried the 3913 Lady Smith 9mm.

She didn't like it: wrong grip angle, slide too stiff.

She went with the Taurus PT111 9mm instead.

"Feels like it was just made for my hand."

THe Smith revolver she shot was a J frame. SHe is going back on her next day off to rent the SP 101 and try it out. I'm going to look around and see if i can find something in her price range. I know the SP will fall into the price range she is looking at I'll look into the S&W j frame. thanks for all the advice guys. SHe realy enjoyed our range day and wants to add that to our list of "What do oyu want to do?" answers.IE:

What do you want to do?
I don't know. WHat do you want?
Movie and lunch or range trip?
Either sounds good to me

:D   :D

How about going to a good gun shop or a gun show and having her fondle a lot of guns to find which ones she is most comfortable with.
