top 10 greatest cartridges ever

How can any discussion of self-contained metallic cartridges not include the one that started it all? The .45-70 was introduced in 1873

Well those sentences to start the 4th paragraph only prove how little the author knows. The .22 short was the first self contained cartridge. Wasn't it 1855 IIRC? Some 18 years the senior.

The .44 Henry was 1860. The .44 Russian was 1870. In 1873 there was a rush of centerfire cartridges being developed. After all that is when Colt's SAA and Winchester's Model 1873 were coming on the market.

I think the .270 needs to be removed from the list. Then if he changed the name the the "Top 10 Most Innovative Rifle Cartridges". It might be plausible. With few exceptions, the cartridges on his list can't be called "the best". Most innovative maybe, but not best.

That would be a tough list to compile unless it could be broken down to the top 10 rifle and the top 10 pistol cartridges. Even then it would be tough. .22 PPC? That doesn't deserve to be on the top 10 in my opinion.

looks like his criteria was "sport, and hunting rifles"

there are a lot of military cartridges that should be in there that revolutionized not only sport shooting, but practically all gun design as a whole.

At least he put .22LR in there.

Not a bad list. A lot of the picks certainly are no brainers like the .30-06, .270, and .30-30 win. I agree that the 7mm Rem Mag should definately be on the list, probably in place of the .22ppc. Overall, not bad.

its amazing how many people wrote an opinion without comprehending the first sentence of the article:

"A tour of history's finest rifle rounds for fighting, hunting and target shooting."

.45-70 Gov't
.458 Win.
.30-'06
.30-30
.375 H&H Magnum
.220 Swift
.257 Weatherby Magnum

Maybe I can't count, or missed something, but that doesn't look like 10.

I admit I missed that one. Okay here's my list:

30-06
45-70
223
308
30-30
375 H&H
243
300 mag
7.62x39
7mm-08

My problem with the idea is that he combines fighting rounds, hunting rounds and target rounds. The caterories are too broad and differing in concepts to be compared and listed alongside each other.
Now, if he were to make those lists seperate and have a top ten for hunting, battle and target...

You could debate this topic for days. I wouldn't have to pick 10 rounds to cover all the the bases. I guess I have say that I have come to prefer cartridges that are versatile. That can be loaded for different uses. The 45-70 the 44 mag are good examples. You can down them for one thing are load them and make cannons out of the right gun. With the 44 mag, I love my Marlin lever action. You can do allot with it. If you get down to it you can cover all the bases with 5 rounds in some shape or form of them. There are many rounds that are around because somebody got bored and made it. Sure some are great rounds but not needed. But I guess that is the fun of it.

The author goes off on a tangent with the .257 Weatherby, .220 Swift and .270 Winchester, and .22 PPC.

I can see easily the rest.

My list would be:

.22 LR
.30-30 Winchester
.30-06
.375 H&H
.223
7.62 x 39
8mm Mauser
9mm
.45 ACP
.40 S&W

Easy -

And I'm not being (too) flippant, here.

It is all the boxes of ammo stacked up on the shelves

Just across from where I am typing, right now.

.308 Win
.30-06 Sprg
.300 Win Mag
.375 H&H
.444 Mar
.45-70 Gov't

My top 10 by bore size, handgun first.
.22lr

.357mag
.45colt
.45acp
.223/5.56
.30-30
.30-06
.308
.45-70

What distinguished the .45-70 from its contemporaries was that it was the first cartridge to incorporate a centrally-primed case capable of withstanding higher pressures than previous rimfire designs and it was reloadable to boot.

Did ANYBODY read the whole piece? No wonder there are so many bad mortgages out there.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 7x57 mauser. Didn't it pretty much start Americans' love affair with 7mm cartridges? I don't claim to know it all, I could be wrong on that.

If nothing more it's the cartridge, along with the Mauser it was shot from, that cleaned our clock in the Spanish American War and finally got us away from single shot rifles with trajectories like rainbows.

The 30-40 Krag was an attempt to duplicate the Mauser and its cartridge.

I don't care how much expertise and experience anyone has, no one could ever not only shoot but evaluate the thousands and thousands of manufactured and handloaded cartridges that exist. To even think that you could is being awfully egotistical and large headed !!

So........... here is THEE list of the absolute 10 best cartidges that have ever been shot out of a barrel :

HA! Not even I am that self-centered to think that I could produce such a list.

However, in my extremely limited experience, here are my favorites (not necessarily the best) :

.22LR
.223Rem.
.22-250Rem
.204Ruger
6.5x284
.270Win.
.243Win.
.30-30
.45ACP
9mm Luger

As I said. I mentioned nothing about centrally primed. When it comes to self contained metallic cartridges, the .45-70 is far from being the one that started it all.

I'm not disputing the fact that it's a great cartridge. (Heck I still hunt with a couple of trapdoors that are over 130 years old.) But it was not the first self contained metallic cartridge. It was not even the first self contained centerfire cartridge. Just the first one designed for a rifle.

Maybe I'm too interested in detail. But if someone doesn't know their history, they don't need to be claiming their expertise in it and writing about it.

Well, I'll throw in MY two cents, just 'cause...

1) .22LR
2) .308
3) .30-'06
4) 7.5 Swiss
5) 7.62x54R
6) 7.62x39
7) 7.7 Arisaka
8) 8mm Mauser
9) 8x56 Mannlicher
10) There is no 10, because I only own rifles in those 9 calibers. So far.

LOL.
