How can any discussion of self-contained metallic cartridges not include the one that started it all? The .45-70 was introduced in 1873
its amazing how many people wrote an opinion without comprehending the first sentence of the article:
"A tour of history's finest rifle rounds for fighting, hunting and target shooting."
What distinguished the .45-70 from its contemporaries was that it was the first cartridge to incorporate a centrally-primed case capable of withstanding higher pressures than previous rimfire designs and it was reloadable to boot.
Did ANYBODY read the whole piece? No wonder there are so many bad mortgages out there.Well those sentences to start the 4th paragraph only prove how little the author knows. The .22 short was the first self contained cartridge. Wasn't it 1855 IIRC? Some 18 years the senior.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 7x57 mauser. Didn't it pretty much start Americans' love affair with 7mm cartridges? I don't claim to know it all, I could be wrong on that.
