Top U.S. Army Marksman Explains Why Gun Nuts Shoot Better

In the practical pistol competition world, the adage is "see what you need to see to get the hits you need." Different shots require different levels of focus on the sights.

Similarly, different shots can require different trigger approaches. You're ALWAYS trying to press the trigger straight to the rear, but the more precise the shot requirements, the more attention will be devoted to the trigger itself. For a 50 yard upper-A zone shot, yeah, that's going to be a steady squeeze. For an open target at 7 yards, spending ANY time "building pressure" is a waste of time. Don't waste an instant on it; see what you need to see (at 7 yards, maybe the target is in sharp focus, and the sights are fuzzy and roughly aligned) and make the gun go bang.

I think the real point of the article is that shooting some competitions that include time pressure and include a variety of shots will help you figure this stuff out, and make it completely intuitive.
