Hi everyone! Where I live we cannot carry. I've had a couple of pea shooters in the past that I have takened to the range. I've owed a .22 and .32. I currently own a .25. I've sold the 22 and 32. For the home for defense I own a .20 gauge Single Shot youth model Topper Jr. I take it Trap shooting sometime. I know a single shot is limited. I keep a shell holder on the gun. I'm looking into getting a .22 revolver for the range. I've experienced a lot of jamming with the automatics. I like to shoot for fun but realize the dangers of society. So, I definitely know the need to have a shotgun near by. I don't think I'm a gun person - meaning - i'm not really into the big cannons (handguns). I like going to the range and shooting for the fun. I likehow light and easy carry the single shot youth model is and plus I'm 5'2 130lbs male.

My advice to a relative neophyte shooter would be a nice .22 handgun. Ammo is dirt cheap, almost no recoil and little report. Practice is cheap and you should do a lot of it. Wear ear protection. A .22 in a well-practiced hand is better than a .45 unused in the bush. If you look around you can find a Ruger Standard Model for $200 to $225 and these are great guns.

A Mossberg 500 that has seen some use will go for $100-$150 and would be light years ahead of the Topper for defense. The 20 ga is fine for home defense where ranges are measure in feet not yards. Number 6 shot should do it at 30 feet or less.

Take a good long look at the Browning Buckmark also. I'm not picking on the Rugerâ„¢ - I have had three of them and I still have one, but the Buckmark is much nicer to my eye and feel.
MSRP $356, but I have seen them at the Sports Authority for less than $300.

Go to the gunshop or gunshow and get a .22 cal revolver. Cheap to shoot, fun to shoot, reliable, easy to clean.
