Touch up bluing on Rem 870 (Oxpho-Blue)

Hey guys,

Just had a quick question regarding touch up bluing on my Remington 870. It has a couple pretty good rust spots that seem to be more than surface rust. I tried lightly sanding them off with steel wool. I picked up some Brownells Oxpho-Blue, and just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with using the Oxpho-Blue on an 870. I tried doing a touch up with it earlier, but it didn't really work. I don't think I took off enough of the old bluing/rust.

How far sanded down do the spots that I want to reblue need to be? Does there need to be no bluing left over and just the bare metal?

My other question is that the bluing is the textured/rough style. How will the oxpho-blue compare to that? Just don't want it to look too different.

Are you sure it's blued and not parkerized?? My buddy has an 870....the receiver is parked and the barrel/mag tube is blued. Oxpho blue won't work on parkerization.

I don't think it is parkerized.. what does parkerized look like?

Parkerization is a semi rough finish, and it's gray. Bluing is smooth, shiny and black.

Is this an 870 Express model?

If so, it will not have a smooth finish but it probably is not a true parkerized finish. They usually come with a rough textured finish that some say is to help hold oil on the surface, others say it just tends to promote rusting by moisture getting into the rough surface and sitting there.

Ummmm....it's probably parkerized. My buddy's 870 express most definitely has a parked receiver, no doubt about it. And it has also rusted LOL. Most folks don't know how to take care of parkerization.
