Well, I think I'm going to be trading my AR. I was stupid and added redundancy to my gun collection (purchasing an RRA Varmint when I already had a precision rifle). In hindsight I should have gone with a carbine to make my collection more rounded.

I posted it on a local forum and had a guy offer to trade his Winchester M1 Garand (which he valued at $800). I couldn't take a hit on my rifle, and honestly Garands are so complicated to put a value on that I don't think I'm going to even try. I had another guy offer a Swiss K31, a Lee Enfield, and a Glock 19 Gen 4.

Looks like I'll be adding a few more milsurps to my WWII collection.

If you have a DD214, you can have a nice Garand shipped to your front door for roughly $650 if you meet some easy criteria. Heck I drove 6 hours to the north store to get mine in person.

Never served in the military, so that's out. I also don't belong to a CMP-affiliated club, so that route is out as well.

There are so many things to learn before you go buying a Garand. Like welded receivers and CAI cast Receivers, Blue Sky imports and throat erosion. Even if it says Winchester on it I'd be careful before I let any deal go down. It could be a good trade but it's easy to get burned as well.

If I had an extra AR I'd consider trading the upper and get one that fits you mission or life style and keep the lower. kwg

Not a Winchester M1 though. CMP Service grade Winchesters were $795 in '09.

You could ask the guy with the Glock and milsurps for a little time to think it over, gives a little extra for other offers to roll in. Not that it's a bad trade, just saying if you weren't totally sold on it.
