The old huge blue trunk in the bedroom everyone thought was Shelly’s Mothers Wedding Dress. Actually inside was her share of daddy’s guns. The Eight Track Tape player atop the Trunk was finished with a CCR tape. I placed the player on the bed and retrieved a few of the guns, though a bulls-eye shooter, he had used a Model 12 and I admired the leather gun case. Guns chosen and Shelly with her carry gun; we headed out to shoot. The dog as always was with her.

Now Sandy, her dog hated gunfire, but the dog trusted me, and when told to stay in my car, she did.

We started off with Shelly shooting a cylinder of carry loads that her dad had reloaded many years ago, these were of the 158 gr LSWC – HP. Shelly was a Bulls –Eye shooters daughter all right, feet perpendicular to the target, weak hand in her pocket. She drew smoothly and quickly, at 3 yards all 6 rounds hit the typing paper folded in half.

Actually her younger sister had the Wedding dress in Storage; she had recently been married in it. Younger Sister had her set of daddy’s guns as well. Their parents had been killed in a car wreck; these girls had been taught to shoot early, while the momma shot with the ladies, the girls liked the attention of the men better. Men melt and get all stupid around little girls.

Shelly reloaded the short barreled Model 10, she asked about her target and I placed another at 5 yards, dang I was impressed, she was afraid she was rusty and out of practice, she possessed a natural talent. Then again her daddy was a great teacher and taught her well.

Her carry gun was a gift from daddy; well both the girls had the same birthday, just two different years, so both the girls had received a gun that year. It was what a daddy did for a 14 and 12 year old.

The old High Standard and the old Smith wheel gun were next up.

Now I moved a target on back to 10 and one at 15 yards, I attached the little bell as we always did. I walked back with the fishing lines and she said she was ready, I pulled the 10 yard line first, the bell jingled, all 6 shots hit the full sheet of typing paper, actually all would have fit inside a sheet folded in half.

“Relax and take your time†I said. She said “I think the sights are off, I pulled the first one- I felt it…we cracked up laughing about those sights.

Actually the 15 yard group was tighter than the 10; I just think she preferred revolvers over a semi.

You see Shelly was born blind.

Daddy took the time and the folks at the range never made no never mind about it. She could sit there all day long and dry fire a wheel gun and never have the dime fall off. Oh momma could shoot, but daddy was the teacher in the family when it came to some things - like guns.

Simple really, just because she didn't have sight, didn't mean she could not shoot. Besides, a girl is a girl and in the real world...well daddy wanted both the girls to be able to protect themselves at an early age.

Shelly finally used the Wedding dress herself, married a real nice guy. Their daughter is a spitting image of Shelly. Oh they argue like most kids and parents, this daughter argues that for her the Weaver is better, daddy likes isosceles , and Shelly is going to shoot one handed with her hand in her pocket.

Sandy, the Seeing Eye dog, finally passed, Einstein the new German Shepard is a lot like Sandy, hates gunfire, but like Sandy would, will after the shooting stops run downrange and pull the targets off and bring back to Shelly. Dad and daughter wishes Einstein would do this for them when shooting longer ranges, like rifles. Nope, going to sit right where he is next to Shelly and grin like …he knows exactly what he is doing.

You are an excellent writer.

That's a very gripping read... quite touching as well.

Steve - thx buddy - as ever, like your style. :)

Just wish these pieces of precious anecdotal material reflected life today ..... sadly I fear it is not anwhere as often the case, but wish it were.

That Shelly is some gal.!
