Had to share this. My 6-year-old daughter told me at the dinner table the other night “Daddy you would be proud of me, I asked a question in the assembly today.†I asked her what she was talking about and she said they had a group of people in that day to teach about “safety stuff†like “Stop, Drop and Roll,†“Don’t talk to strangers,†“Don’t answer the door by yourself,â€â€¦

She said they also told the kids “Never, ever touch a gun.†So she raised her hand and asked “What if your Daddy has taught you the four rules of safe gun handling?â€

I guess it sinks in, and glad I am raising kids that can think for themselves, even at 6.

Would pay a lot of money to have their reactions on film…

a few months back my 7 yr old niece was horrified that my handgun only holds ten rounds.
zoe - "what?? thats not enough! what if there was a moose, a bear, another moose...?"
me - "and a bad guy who wanted to hurt one of you kids?"
zoe - "yeah, that too!"
me - "dont worry, ive got four spare magazines already loaded in my pocket, and an unopened box of ammo in my backpack."
zoe - "well, okay...i guess that will do. why are you laughing?"
me - "you just figured out how illogical sheeple lawmakers really are."
zoe - "i dont know what that means."
me - "its okay. you done good."

I remember going shooting for the first time when I was 5 years old with my dad. He stood behind me and helped me shoot his monstrous (or so it seemed) accurized Colt 1911. Seeing those water jugs explode with the 45ACP rounds really taught me a lesson on how dangerous guns were. Ever since then, I have never had an accident or gone out and shot up the neighbor kids -- even though we as kids always had access to my dad's Detective Special in case of a break-in.
Guns were never a taboo, and we always knew that we could ask dad to help us unload the guns so that we could look at them, so it was never the mysterious "gun in the drawer" that the VPC and HCI always tout.

I have a 4 1/2 daughter - we took the Ruger 22/45 out when she was 4, and she loved it! She refers to it as 'the little gun that I can shoot'!

Moments like that make you feel good about your kids.

Great that some kid has some idea about safe gun handling. The problem is that I wouldn't trust kids to be responsible enough. Heck, there are still plenty of adults out there with guns who think the 4 rules are total BS or unnecessary.

You're not far off Missile Cop

I asked her what they said, and she said they just looked at each other for a minute (I would like to imagine with slack jaws and wide eyes ) and then repeated that kids should never touch guns.

She told me "That's OK, I know its alright when I am with you and you say its OK." She and her brother can cite the 4 rules from memory and explain what each one means. Nice to know they don't swallow everything the teachers say hook, line and sinker.
