Hi Folks,

I have a chance to pick up a 50 caliber Traditions Deerhunter flinter, synthetic stock, VERY cheaply. It looks like a nice little rifle that would fit youngsters and small adults. The owner used it for hunting in PA and it shows a little wear but sparks well and is mechanically sound. I figure I can't lose with it. But I'm not familiar with the model so was curious what others on the forum thought of it. This will be strictly for plinking and letting youngsters get a feel for a flinter since they can't shoot a regular size rifle comfortably. (It's very light and balances well.)

Thanks for any opinions.

Regards, Jeff

I have a Traditions 50 cal i bought in kit form from Bass Pro many years ago for $105.00. Mine is marked 1/66 twist. After it was built and shot for the first time it was dead on with no sight adjustment ever needed. It will shoot round balls into less than 2" at 50 yards, actually less but i don't think anyone would believe me if i told how well it really shoots.

This gun has radius cut riffling and one of the smoothest bores i have ever seen. I made a light to drop down the bore to look at my different brands of BP rifles and it was the best of all.

Buy the gun.

Hey Ratshooter,

Thanks for the feedback. I forgot to mention that this one also has a 1:66 twist. The current version has a 1:48 twist which I think is kinda fast for a 50 caliber round ball. If I can get it (will know Sunday) it will be the best fifty dollar rifle I've ever gotten.

Regards, Jeff

Hello BRBear,.

Fifty bucks is a steal. I bet the gun doesn't have a hundred shots through it. I wish i could find a cheap flinter. I just bought 1200 caps from my gun pusher and paid $32.00 out the door. And that was a deal.

My friend had a flint lock and i knapped out some flints for it. They weren't pretty but they worked. I have 1200 lbs of lead and lots of molds. Only having to buy powder would make for some cheap shooting.

Post back if you get the gun. Lots o luck.
