FINALLY got around to making a review of my rifle and my blackpowder pistols. pardon me if i am a bit clumsy in the video, i hadn't slept the night before, i was up doing some cool stuff. to make it worse we were out of coffee. anyway, it's a Traditions Frontier flintlock rifle! powerful, accurate, reliable. goes boom pretty consistently as long as my flints are sharp and my powder is dry. mine seems to like those 360 grain Lee improved Minnie balls that i cast but only if they are pure lead. they pack one heck of a punch under 80 grains of Jim Shockey's powder. i know it's a powder substitute, but i do get decent reliability with it. i bet with real black i could get even better reliability. my possibles bag was a bit messed up and i could not find a few items, but oh well, that's life. i love my rifle, it was a heck of a fun build, and i plan on doing more gun kits in the future. possibly a derringer or a pistol, maybe percussion. so here is the link to my video:

and those of you interested in my NAA Super Companion's rear sight I've been yacking about here's a link to my video on my pistols:

in that video i also show my Remington rider derringer and it's custom plating job i did on it with a Caswell plating kit. it's real easy to do and yields real nice results. i also show off my NAA companion, it's really small and cute!

i will be doing a video where i shoot my collection of guns, everything from my 2mm pinfire to my.50 flintlock rifle and everything in between!! i would especially like to show the proper shooting technique for those NAA minis and a few long shots! i love to stretch those little guns out! i also will shoot some water filled pop cans, maybe some fruit or a couple balloons.

hope you all enjoy!

Sincerely, Levi Hawken Dabney

A bit surprised the subs are serving you so well. Those are quite good little rifles; I have two.

i too was surprised my rifle would digest that substitute. i found that i can get even better ignition if you add a little sulfur to it! i like to put a little bit in the Jim Shockey's pistol granulation powder that i use to prime it. the only drawback is that it forms really sticky tar-like stuff under the frizzen and in the pan. it is pretty messy and can get on the flint. so i use a wet patch to clean out my pan and to wipe down my frizzen and flint as well as some other parts. then, i dry it with a clean patch. it seems to work good enough for me to use it again. i do want to get me some real black soon, that might work even better! i think that i might get some saltpeter and make some real black powder soon! that would be fantastic! i have a good recipe that i need to make again!

Levi, when you get your hands on some real black powder you will be A-MAZED:D at how fast ignition will be compared to the substitute you now use. I understand that the sub is all that is available to you and the need to make smoke with what is at hand. Here's hoping you can get ahold of the real stuff real soon.:)

well thank you :) i am glad you like my work! the kit didn't come with any instructions that i was able to locate, so it was a real challenge. but, i used some pictures as reference, and got it together! i used a Birchwood Casey stock/metal finishing kit for the metal and wood. i first cleaned and blued the metal parts, assembled the thing, fitted everything nicely, then applied some walnut stain, let that dry, then several coats of Tru-oil, buffing lightly in between coats with some 00 steel wool. i think that is one heck of a finish!

i might make a video on some of the patch knives i have made, along with some other shoot-able creations! i am also considering getting a pistol kit and doing a little tutorial on stock finishing with that!
