Has anyone tried Trail Boss powder in an autoloader? The maker gives a formula for developing loads in handguns and rifles with both lead and jacketed bullets. I assumed autos have been left out, have never seen any data or mention of this powder in an auto. Thanks.

It's a bulky powder intended for light loads in BIG cases that were designed for black powder. It is to take up the space in the case and prevent the possibility of a double charge. It's not really applicable to a small volume, high intensity case. I doubt it'd work very well in most auto calibers.

That's about what I thought. Was just wondering. It has worked so well when I have used it. Thanks!

I have a 9oz can for my 45 Colt loads. I've been using 231 for my 45 ACP loads.
I'd not thought to pour the TB into a ACP cartridge to see how FULL it gets. I put 5.4g of TB behind a 200g RNFT for a LIGHT wife friendly load. I don't remember exactly how full the cartridge was, but I'm thinking it'd have been a tight fit in the ACP brass.

One thing to keep in mind with trail boss is that its NOT TO BE COMPRESED.

You compress TB and pressures will get wacky fast. This alone makes it ill suited to small cap high pressure autoloader rounds

I knew a guy that loaded trail boss in his 9mm for falling steel matches. In the hundreds of rounds i saw him fire, he never had a problem

I only use it in revolver loads but a fellow shooter uses it in his old Colt Gold Cup with a 10 lb recoil spring, 3.5 gr. Trail Boss behind a 230 gr. LRN bullet. It functions reliably and knocks fown the steel poppers with authority.

Trail Boss

Handloader magazine I think had an article on Trail Boss.

I bought some and 4.9 grains about fills the case,
DO NOT COMPRESS THIS POWDER BTW.

It is for use with cast bullets not jacketed.

Nice powder but I will stay with Unique. This is a good powder to learn how to reload on, overcharges are apparent when the case overflows!

About the only auto cartridge I've heard of someone loading for is the .45 ACP, but haven't seen any data printed on it yet.

Uncompressed, I do not see how it could make a 9MM cycle, but I surely could be wrong.
