Trail boss+jacketed bullet= safe

Whenever the use of Trail Boss and jacketed bullets comes up, most people say it is unsafe to use. They will go on to say that even the manufacture says it is unsafe.

Well, for at least 3 years it has been safe to use.

Yes, it was intended to be used with lead only, but it has been proved by the manufacture that it is safe to use AND they even give a formula on how to use it for any caliber you own.

I cannot speak for others, but I have never said it was unsafe. I use it in some rifle applications with jacketed/plated bullets.

I have said it doesn't work well with jacketed bullets in revolver rounds, and I stand by that.

Safe is one thing, not working well is another.
 
I'm using it in rifles with jacketed and lead bullets. Goal is to shoot mostly lead. I've tried it with jacketed bullets for the .357 and .45ACP and don't find it very effective.
 
I asked about the TB in revolver rounds earlier this week and Walkalong and others confirmed that it's not the best combination. I'm very happy with it as it was intended - mild lead loads - and so the issue's settled for me. I don't reload any rifle aside from 30 carbine, and for that I stick to the recipe I believe it was designed for - 110g RN over 14-15g of H110.
 
When it was first introduced it was not recommended for use with jacketed bullets.

They've since done the research and found that it was indeed a good choice for use with the full-length gas checks.
 
Trail Boss

I like to "save" my Trail Boss for low velocity Cowboy Loads. There are so many better powders out there to service the hunting loads of pistol and rifle calibers. I have tried Trail Boss at 14gr for my Sharps 45-70 and it made for a pretty wimpy load. I felt that I was wasting the powder doing that.

AA 5477 or SR 4759 is the next step up, and will be somewhere in the middle between a case full of TB and a full power load.
