im not really sure if this is the right place to put this, but i was just wondering if anyone knew the procedure for traveling with a firearm on a train. I have never travelled by train before so forgive my ignorance but since ticket prices are so high for airlines im considering making my next trip by train, and im just checking to see if the procedure for traveling with any firearm is different than it is aboard an airliner. thanks for all your help in advance!

As a frequent Amtrak rider I know firearms are prohibited on amtrak trains, and Amtrak reserves the right to search all bags, and remove you from a train if you don't consent to a search of your bags. That said however, I've never been searched on Amtrak, nor have I ever had to go through a metal detector (and this is to/from NYC 's Penn Station).

I wouldn't recommend it, but if you're going to do it, I'd try to stick to an Acela or at least in business class for the least possible hassles.

Which train? Here's Amtrak's wonderful policy:
Prohibited Items

The following kinds of items are prohibited as both checked and carry-on baggage:

Any type of gun, firearm, ammunition, explosives, or weapon.
They are even worse than airlines apparently.

My understanding is that trains are also covered by TSA and that as the first two posters have said there are no firearms allowed by any railroad that does interstate travel. This includes CCW, carry on, and checked baggage.

I do not know about intrastate trains.
