Just gotta share the progress on my great uncle's Remington 760.

Here it is the way I received it, with see thru mounts.

Decided right off the bat that I needed to lose the see through setup. Took it off, took the gun apart, and scrubbed the down.

Installed a Timney trigger. What a pleasant difference!

Then went on ebay and GunBroker to find some period-correct mounts. Also, bought an old Weaver K4 just in case I changed my mind on the fit and finish of the old Redfield. Ended up with a few options.

Ended up hating the Redfield Swing-Over mounts and the Weaver scope. Decided that I would stay with uncle's original old 3X9 Redfield. Finding mounts was a challenge.

After a few purchases and much energy, I finally found the right combination. A NOS Redfield JR base for 760 (the new Leupolds and Redfields are much longer and do not fit the gun very nicely). On top of the mount went two vintage bottom screw Redfield low rings.

I must say, this really looks sharp and brings the line of sight down where it should be.

Pretty happy!

That furniture looks immaculate. Beautiful rifle. It's nice to see period correct accessories on originals. Man, just a beautiful rifle. If you could only extract the stories from it.

With the title I was a little afraid that you'd bubba'd it. Extremely happy to see that is far from the case.
Very nicely done.

BluegrassDan, you wound up with some very nice results there. My great uncle had that same rifle for deer hunting - thanks for bringing back some great memories!

Good group...beautiful and deadly 760.

What trigger pull weight did you end up with after installing the Timney trigger?

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Very nice! I very recently bought a model 760 and decided to go with a an "old school" peep setup. I don't have pics yet. Small world...I sighted in a model 742 I inherited from grandfather from the very same bench. I assume that's the range within a mile or two of Fish Springs...Looks like it anyway. I grew up fishn watauga and hunting above Hampton.

I went with the lowest weight spring, and it took some metal removal to get the sear to lock in good. At first, it wouldn't engage the sear entirely and the trigger would disengage with the slightest of movement, even with the safety on. Worked it down in the right places and polished it up good. Now it engages properly and holds tight with all amounts of movements, bumps, and outright attempts to make it go off unexpectedly.

I'll add that the metal removal and polishing was NOT in the sear area, but in the lower portion of the mechanism. The shape of the new drop in piece was slightly different from the original, causing it not to close entirely.

You know the place!

I have hunted for many decades with an early fifties era Model 760 rifle, chambered in 30-06 Springfield, that I got from my grandfather in the late sixties. The early Model 760s had a pretty low comb drop, making them easier to get a sight picture with irons as opposed to craning your neck to see the target with a scope (and those awful "see-thru" mounts on an early Model 760 would stretch a giraff's neck). Accordingly, I have used a Williams "FoolProof" receiver sight with great satisfaction on this rifle (and a few others) over the past many years.

And you should be "pretty happy" with the work you did on your great uncle's rifle. Very nice work, indeed!

As an aside and I'm sure it's just me, on one of your fine photos it looks like a dog sleeping under the "Spring Water" jug...:what:

I inherited my grandfathers 740 semi auto with a weaver 4X on it. Didn't have to touch it. It never failed him with reloaded 30-06 150gr Remington Bronze Points.

You have done a lot of loving work on your uncles 760 and it shows. Happy Hunting.
