This is kind of an odd question, but does anyone know where I could find patterns for making a trap vest? I want to give my wife a project for her new sewing machine. :D

You're sure right on the odd question part... just kidding.

So, for reference, I had to call my mom on this one. She's about as harcore into sewing as they come. As an example, after my dad got his D10, she went out and outspent him on a sewing machine as an "equitable trade."

So, what she said is that there are patterns available special order in sewing stores for what I consider to be "winter" vests, ie. not mesh. She said that the mesh used to create shooting vests is such a PIA that the average sewer should never consider using it. If your wife is still interested, PM me and I'll get you some more specific info.

For my two bits, I'd just get a cheap vest you like from walmart and have her take it apart and customize it for you.

ditto on the getting a cheap vest and modifying/ use as a template.
I had a sewing business for sailors, some of the cheapest SOB's around (cuz I'm one too!). If they had a favorite pair of shorts, they would bring them in, and we'd take them apart to make a pattern. Worked great.

For my sewing vest, I took a Ben Davis workshirt, and sewed a big leather patch on it. Definitely unique, and as cool as I feel when I'm wearing it, I'm surprised noones asked me to make one for them!!!

SEWING vest??

Is that like a fishing vest, or a photog vest maybe, with lots of pockets?

Trust me, I know what you mean. Her 'new' sewing machine is a used Husqvarna (Designer 1) which we purchased at the bargain basment price of $4,000. :p Yes, that's $4,000. It's damn near a sewing/embroidery/quilting CAD/CAM machine.

Word, my good friend. Word indeed. My mom's toting a brand spanking new Husqvarna Designer SE, with all the attachments and digitizing software. I built her a computer to go with her sewing machine.

My wife was drooling over that machine. :p

I guess that makes them both 'tacticool' in the sewing world. Perhaps we need to get them aimpoints and tactical slings? :p
