Wednesday, I bought a Remington SPS Tactical (.308) $747.42 (tax included). Thursday, I sent the bolt to Badger Ordnance to have a tactical bolt knob installed, $106.90 (shipping included). Friday, I ordered an H-S Precision Stock $310.90 (got a deal on it), also ordered an H-S Precision Detachable Box Magazine (10-Shot) $330.00. Saturday, just ordered a Badger Ordnance one-piece scope rail $160.00.

What started as a $747.42 rifle has already bloomed into $1,655.22 and its only getting started, I need an intervention but there is no one here to stop me. Crap, I haven't bought a scope yet and since I am going this far I might as well scrap the barrel and get a match grade, damn it I was going to keep the barrel too, but it makes no since to put this kind of money into a rifle and keep the stock barrel. I give up...........................................................:banghead:

Well, the only thing I can say is that you ought to shoot it before buying a match barrel. Might already have one :)

Of course, getting one just because you want to is good enough reason too.

Pssssh, my latest rifle cost that much and all I did was add a scope. And this will be just for hunting...

Could have been worse though, you could always buy an AI or TRG, or go full on custom. ;)

And whatever you do, don't buy an AR.

Thus far you haven't actually done anything to make it out shoot the stock rifle. Still, it makes little sense to contemplate scraping the stock barrel when you apparently haven't even shot the rifle yet...??? How about some "mods" to make it actually shoot better like some trigger work or bedding? Although you can't see those type of mods, they do work and the results have a measurable effect. I'm not trying to come off as a "Fudd" here but you did ask for an "intervention." If you do replace the stock barrel be sure and have the locking lugs lapped at the same time. Good Luck with your new rifle...

I'm not going to lecture or try to intervene. But what I will do is request you post up some pics when you're done. Sounds like a killer rifle.

Didn't your father ever sit you down to have "that talk"? Or did you HONESTLY NOT KNOW that this "sweet little thing" was one of "those" tactical rifles your mother warned you about?

I'm not judging you... just be honest with yourself, and know that we care, know that we're always here for you... know that we expect pictures.

Next time ... just buy an action. You might save some money, over buying a complete rifle and replacing most of its parts, if you just start with an action and buy exactly what you want for it from the beginning.

IOW, build it custom from the ground up.

Bit excessive. I started with an SPS VS Stainless ($484) and got a B&C Medalist for $224 and Timney trigger for $119. That's good enough for now and I shoot it every chance I get. When the barrel is gone, then it will see the best I can buy. But not till then.

Don't know why but I'll shoot a barrel till it's dead.

Detachable box magazine? Why, it's a bolt action. I have AR's to cycle lots of ammo.

On the good side you probably have a nice looking rifle.

I have over $7000 in my long range rifle. I understand completly. Yeah, if you are going that route. It cant wait to see it when it's done.. Keep us posted with some photos...

Update:

I have decided to keep the factory barrel, I will give Remington the benefit of the doubt. However, I have purchased David Tubb's 308 FinalFinish + TMS Loaded Ammo Complete Care ProPack, to just help the tube out a little bit. The FinalFinish system should work great since its the first ammo the barrel will develop a relationship with.

Smart move! Figure out how that baby shoots before getting a "match" barrel. A lot of factory barrels are outstanding nowadays on bolt guns.

I'm also of the camp "shoot it till it's worn out". My 300 Win Mag original barrel lasted 12 years before I got a Krieger put on it. The original would shoot 1/3MOA on a good calm day up until the day I replaced it. The Krieger does about the same.

Only reason I replaced the original was excessive fouling due to throat erosion. I had to scrub it every shot or two if I wanted <1" groups at 300 yards. Otherwise by the time I got to the 10th shot, it was spreading to about 4".

The new Krieger doesn't foul. I clean it about every 100 rounds. Eventually... it will foul! :)

Keep in mind, most barrels don't wear out from shooting, they wear out from improper CLEANING.

Use a long rod with a "Stop" (circular clamp) on it that is set to keep the jig from exiting the muzzle, and an action guide, clean from the rear only. (Or clean it with the muzzle 1/4-1/2" from a wall, to keep it from exiting.)

Never, ever, ever clean a bolt gun from the muzzle end, even with a muzzle cap/guide.. there's no reason to do so and you're only inviting a damaged crown, and crap accuracy.

I have one of these rifles and with nothing done to it except adding a scope it will shoot 5 shot 1/2" groups from the bench @ 100 yds as long as I don't screw up (I normally pull at least one shot). I would definitely try the factory barrel before replacing it.

Yea, I hear you. I was going to put a Krieger barrel (5R) on this rifle but it just didn't make since to buy a new rifle just to tear it apart for the action. I don't know how long this barrel will last, but Tubb's FinalFinish claims to add an extra 1000 rounds to the life of the barrel. I hope the rifle and myself have a long relationship. However, up next for the rifle is a nice Cerakote finish or the like.

I would see how the rifle performs before changing barrels and doing any accuracy mods.

This is a bone stock action/barrel/trigger sps varmint I cut to 16 inches.

Shot great from the box even with the factory stock as the first picture shows.

From being brand new out of the box it took me 3 shots from using a laser bore sighter after mounting the scope to get sighted in at 100yds. These are the next 9 shots ever fried from this rifle using three different bullet weights and were just loads pulled out of a loading manual, not worked up.
