If able i vote to release him on some public hunting grounds and let it be.Think would you shoot the neighbors dog for pooping in your yard would you?I live on a farm and am very much in favor of terminating pest. When they cause property damage or threaten livestock and have shot the neighbors dogs before. He didn't seem to be causing a large scale problem where the shoot it option would be the most efficient way to be rid of them.If he is small you can expect at least four more of them to be around somewhere plus the sow shes the one to shoot if you get the chance.Best of luck and I know a great pulled coon bbq recipe.

I have a Ground hog problem that usually lasts from about June to mid- August on a yearly basis mostly because of "young of the year" dispersion.
My solution is a LARGE Havahart trap and a .22 pill dispensed from my S&W .22/.32 Kit Gun.
Over July 4th weekend I managed to eliminate 7 hogs .
I don't leave my trap set overnight to discourage the coon/skunk critters and when the trap IS set I monitor the same frequently so an animal is not
"caught" for long periods of time.
My rather large vegetable garden(2000 sq. ft.) is surrouded by a 5 foot high fence to discourage crop damage especially from the local deer herd.
Carefull when handling any caught animal as the Rabies epidemic is for real.

Train him to protect your garden from the rest of his kind for a little food each day! lol

I could go either way I guess. Where I live, I could drive an hour and let it go and nobody would ever see it again. But this part of AZ doesn't have a whole bunch of coons, and they aren't a problem for most folks. The only time I notice coons is when I see them dead on the highway. That's about as much trouble they've caused me. Releasing it a few miles away may very well not take care of the problem though, animals often travel long distances, especially to a known food source (your garden).

If I had a coon (or any animal) bothering me enough to where I had to trap it, most likely I'd shoot it. If it's a pest, it's a pest.

I hunt and fish and have for years, so I have no issues killing things for food. That said, I'd have a hard time shooting a young coon in "cold blood" that was sitting in a trap looking at me. Take the lil bugger for a ride...........

I would shoot it. Once a raccoon finds a place where it can reliably get food, it will return and it will show other raccoons the "food spot" as well as the increased raccoon traffic causing raccoons and other varmints and pests to find "the spot" more easily.

It is kind of disgusting that you would take a vote on this. There are folks on here that advocate poisoning of animals, will kill other people's pets for getting too close or wandering on their propery, etc., and they come on here to bragg about it. Don't feed the trash. Let 'em starve or join the army for a real taste of violence. Once they experience a little real killing, get to experience what it feels like to be on the other side, they'll have their fill of murder.

I think you should lock this thread as it has nothing to do with hunting or shooting. Don't post stuff like this again, mods please do something about this. I can't say certain words on here because I will offend someone with baby ears, but this trash is okay?

Now go do the right thing and take that 'coon out to the woods and let him go. It would be a good idea to take him out a distance. If he is too young, he might not be ready though. Try calling a wildlife service or a vet for a recommendation. They may even come out and pick it up and release it for you. I know PETA should offer this service for all the talk...

FWIW, 'coons can be beneficial, just like the 'possums (which are called nature's little gardeners). As long as you exclude them from areas you don't want them, they aren't pests. I guess they can be if rabid, in that case shooting is the most humane thing you can do. I wouldn't handle them at all. But they eat all manner of REAL pests, such as rodents. So do the 'possums.

So many people try to fight nature... Like the fellow said, 50 years ago it wouldn't have been an issue. 50 years ago you would have sprayed your kid with DDT to keep him from getting mosquito bit too. 50 years ago wildlife eradication programs were popular. This led to the collapse of natural predator prey systems. 50 years ago we also did atmospheric nuclear testing on our soldiers... I'd say we've come a long way in 50 years and I don't want to go back (but we obviously have quite a way to go).

Respect nature.

Yes, there are people on here that will shoot a dog for pooping in the yard. That was discussed on here last week, twice in fact, maybe more.

Mods, please end this crap. Voting on killing an animal is NOT the "high road". This forum has increasingly been used to discuss the killing of pets, strays, etc., and there are some pretty disgusting answers on here too.

If the topic can't be kept to hunting, perhaps it would be best to close this one altogether. If I have to watch my language to keep from offending baby ears (likely the guy with a pan of antifreeze next to his shed no doubt) then I shouldn't have to read this garbage either. It doesn't belong here.

A decision has been reached;
Live release

No offense was intended in this thread, I was simply trying to get some information from those more experienced than I, perhaps a poll wasn't the best idea, noted for future reference

Mods, feel free to lock/bury/nuke from orbit this thread.
