Traveling from Alabama to Texas...Carry info, is this ok?

I am finally graduating from college, and I am moving from Alabama to Houston Texas (Originally from Cape Cod...Figure that one out) and I am driving will all my stuff in my 4runner through alabama,Miss,Lousiana to Texas.

I have permits that are valid and allow me to carry in all of these states, (I have non resident permits from Florida,New Hampshire, Penn and Ma) but my question is it ok to carry my pistol in my glove box? I keep my proof of insurance in my center console so they is no need to go into the glove box if I was stopped. I just cant carry on my hip with a sig 226. thanks

I've been running I-10 from Tallahassee to SanAntone some three or four round trips a year, since 1989. I've been stopped for speeding maybe three times. I've yet to be hassled in any way, shape or form.

I've yet to be hassled anywhere along the way, whether cafe parking lot or motel, by any sort of goblin.

Not as often on I-20 from B'ham to Dallas, but same story.

IOW, pack everything away; leave your pistol in the console, and don't sweat it.

Louisiana and Mississippi recognize Alabama CHLs. Texas doesn't.

Before the days of CHL in Texas, I never had a cop ask if I had a pistol in my car.

Maybe, maybe not, depends since travelling wasnt (infact it still isnt) defined so its up to the police officers discretion and then possibly a jury.

However now under the circumstances a police officer is supposed to "presume" that the person is travelling.

Do you mean the interstate travel provisions of the Firearms Owners Protective Act (FOPA)? That makes no provision for carrying a loaded weapon in a glovebox. It provides that if possession of the weapon is legal at the place where the journey begins and at the place where the journey ends, you may transport UNLOADED firearms if they are in a locked case, stored in the trunk of the vehicle or in the case of a vehicle with no trunk, in the rear cargo area where it/they are not readily accessible to the driver.

If you are referring to an "on a journey" provision of one state's laws, it has no effect while driving in any other state.

According to www.packing.org, Alabama honors your Florida and New Hampshire CHLs, Mississippi honors your Florida and New Hampshire CHLs, Louisiana honors your Florida and New Hampshire CHLs, Texas honors your Florida and Pennsylvania CHLs.

I am so happy to be moving from Massachussetts to Houston!!

I am so sick of the liberals and all the antis in Ma, although I must say that there are more gunowners than you would think in Ma. But I am excited about being able to buy any type of pistol that I want, since our attorney general put a large amount of restrictions on pistols. Plus I can easily find a place to hunt in Texas since there is a huge deer/hog population.

Would you belive that there is someone is coming from someone who lived about 15 minutes away from Ted Kennedy on the cape??

In Mississippi, it is already legal to carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle as it is considered an extention of the home. That has been convirmed both by my local sherrif's office as well as the MS State Trooper headquarters in Jackson.

In MS, the car is not considered an extension of your home. However, it is generally legal for a sane, not-under-the-influence, noncriminal adult to carry a gun in the car, concealed or not. Exceptions, like the Natchez Trace Parkway (National Park) do exist. As was previously stated, MS and FL have CCW permit reciprocity, so you're good to go here.

My $.02 says to put the proof of insurance in the glove box and the pistol in the console. It's closer that way, and you can ready it without stopping or seriously hindering your driving ability. Reaching for the glovebox is a good way to wind up in the ditch at 70mph. Keep the insurance in the glove box so that it's separate from the pistol. If you get stopped, you'll have a good minute or so to retrieve your insurance from the glove box. I've been stopped three times (no tickets, thank you!), and I have always had plenty of time to ready all of the relevant paperwork before the officer got to the car, and they do tend to react favorably to somebody who has license and insurance waiting on them when they get to the window.
