Tried out my new Ruger 10/22....please give me feedback (pics included)

I took it out and fired 50 rounds into a small target from 25 yards. I used the iron sights that came with the rifle. I used winchester super X ammo. A few shots were from a standing position but most were from a sitting position. That's a standard-sized pen for reference.

I'm kind of disappointed honestly...I feel like I improved slightly as I went on however. The first couple of magazines hit more towards the bottom of the green, but later I started getting *marginally* tighter groups. I focused on the front sight, and I definitely don't feel like I was flinching in anticipation of the "recoil" of the .22. I did have a hard time maintaining a good sight picture...I would look at the target, and then try to line up the bead with the bottom of the bulls eye but I felt like once I focused on the front sight I couldn't really "see" the target anymore, and I could definitely detect that I was moving a swaying. I also fired at the bottom of my breaths.

I'm left eye dominant but right handed, so I was shooting with my left eye closed.

Any tips to improve accuracy? I'd like to be able to hit a half-dollar sized group with 50 rounds from 25 yards (i.e. keep all the hits somewhere between the 10 ring and the bulls eye ring).

Don't feel bad, precision 22 ammo is expensive, and its the only stuff that shoots good. I chased bugholes with my Savage MKII, and one group would measure .280", and the next one would be .750", however I refused to buy match ammo, and found Fed Champion to shoot pretty good for bulk. Hang in there, there always room for improovment

I was not impressed by out of the box accuracy of 10/22 so I got rid of it. Looks like you got what you paid for...
If you want to shoot standing, it helps if you lower the weapon after each shot and raise it back to aim and fire another shot. If you just hold it and keep shooting , your left hand eventually gets tired and it starts shaking

+1 on the Federal Champion for good, cheap ammo.

BTW, I think it's been renamed Federal "Lightning", that's how I've been getting it lately. Same stuff, different box.

Now maybe it's just the iron sights or you. Or maybe it's the gun. I have a scope on mine and have since I got it so I've never shot it with open sights but it's a lot more accurate than that.

This is what mine did at approx 36 yards. It was off a deck rail so it wasn't like I had a super steady rest. I did have a 3x9 Simmons scope on it though. I didn't take time to aim super carefully either but I also didn't fire them off as fast as I could. I shot 2 or 3 quickly sometimes but mostly just kept shooting but not super rapid fire. This was also with the Winchester Xpert bulk pack ammo.



It's not great but it's decent and a lot better than what yours was. I'm sure if I had a steady rest and shot one shot then re aimed completely I could have done a lot better. I can shoot bottle tops off Pepsi bottles with this thing all day long.

I think a 3x9 scope is going to give a MUCH clearer sight picture than the stock sights do. At least I hope so! I mean with the iron sights there's only so much inherent accuracy available sine the front bead effectively obscures a huge portion of the target at 25 yards. So it's not really a fair comparison is it? Or maybe I'm wrong since ive never used a scope with this rifle....

Is there any website I can go to where people post targets with the yardage and what kind of sights used?

honestly, it's quite bad considering it's only 25 yards.... when i use to own my GSG-5 rifle, i can shoot about a 2 inch group at 25 yards the first time i shot it using cci minimags. never shot a 10/22, but i assumed it would be more accurate than the GSG-5.

took it to the woods for the first time and shot this dude @ about 20-25yards. i kind of regretted selling this. sold it to a member of this site.

A couple of thoughts.

If you are left eye dominate, then you should shoot better left handed.

The front sight shouldn't cover the target. Sight it in so that the bullet impacts just above the tip of the front sight bead. That way the front sight doesn't obscure the target.

Focus on the front sight, both the rear sight and the target should be blurry.

And lastly don't get discouraged. With almost anything you can't just jump in and shoot a perfect score right from the beginning. Is there anywhere in your area to get some training?

The stock sights on the 10/22 suck. End of story. Get a scope, or better yet get some tech sights:

The oem Ruger 10/22 sights are about as basic as you can get. Shooting from a rest nothing beats a good scope, but a Williams peep sight is a close second.

Stock sights on 10/22 suck. Get a decent 2-7 X or 3-9X RF scope for it. You will cut your groups in 1/2 right away.

So you are comparing a $500 gun with really good sites to a $200 gun with really, REALLY bad sites.

The groups put up are not bad. If you combine your eye dominance with horrible sites and a brand new gun. You should be doing better every time you shoot it.

There are 3 things I would recommend to help you be more accurate that does not include practice.
1 - Remove the barrel band and see what happens, many times it puts bad pressure on the barrel and causes bad accuracy, it is only for looks anyway. Be prepared to be shooting much higher when you do this.
2 - Get some good sites. Tech Sites and Williams were mentioned, both will make a huge difference in site quality. I do not have experience with the Williams 10/22 sites, I have a set on another rifle, but the Tech I have used a lot and I like them. A decent red dot site will work also, I like the holo sites myself.
3 - Get an aftermarket hammer. Costs about $35 and takes about 5 minutes to replace. Will drop your 8# pull down to around 3. This will help to not jerk as much when the trigger is pulled.

No matter what, as you shoot it you will get better and so will the gun.

When I got mine I tested every brand and style of ammo I could find. The gun said for the price it liked CCI Mini Mag HP's. Been using them ever since, 100 yd. sage rat shots no problem with an old Weaver K4 scope.
