I've had several people and a few gunsmiths tell me a trigger job on a Ruger P85 can't be done because of the double/single action. I'm not talking about "smoothing it out" so much as shortening the ATROCIOUSLY long pull. I had one very reputable gunsmith tell me he's too busy, but he used to do them and yes it's possible, but I haven't clarified with him yet about smoothness vs. pull. Anybody have any experience on this?

I don't really know about shortening the trigger pull. I seem to recall someone at rugerforum posting that they had had it done but I don't remember who it was. At one time I did swap to a lighter hammer spring from Wolff in my .40 cal P94. It lightened the pull but did not shorten it. I wound up swapping it back as after the trigger wore in from shooting I liked the way the stock spring felt better & I don't really like the idea of a modified trigger on a pistol I might use for self defense.

Get a Wolfe reduced power mainspring, install a trigger from a P-95 then practice!

I searched midway and brownells and couldln't find a mainspring, just hammer springs (which is fine as long as I run it and have no weak strikes). Also, I have no experience with p95s but what exactly do you mean by "install a trigger from a P-95?"

The hammer spring IS the mainspring.

You can install a P95 trigger in a P89. It shortens reach a bit and feels better.

Google it, it's not hard to do and easy to learn how to do it.

Aha, and the learning continues. Mine is a P85 btw if it matters. This may sound dumb, but just so I'm understanding you right, when you say trigger (since we're not talking a drop in trigger group like an AR) you literally mean just that one part that a finger presses?

Correct.

You have to grind away a foot to make it fit, but it's easy to do.

Now that you know that it's a common thing to do, google it and you'll find some "how to" threads with pics.

I suspect it'll go a long ways to addressing your problem. (the rest involves practice!)

O brother, you mean I hafta master something on a computer other than typing? Haha ok, if I must. A couple other places didn't have it, and the wolff spring kit from Midway was backordered with an expected delivery date of 10/15, but hopefully it gets in much earlier.

I don't know if you got a better price from midway but wolff has at site at www.gunsprings.com. It has been a while & I'm not sure how long it took to get what I ordered from them now though.
