Looking at throwing some fiber optic sights on my home defense Mossberg 500. I like Trijicon night sights for ccw, so I figured I'd stick with the known company.

Looking at these things online, it LOOKS like it's built to go on a rail... But nowhere on the product page does it say anything about that. My 500 does not have a rail. Will that be a problem?

Anyone out there have experience with Trijidot?

Anyone out there know of a fiber optic sight they would suggest OVER Trijidot? Thanks in advance.

Why not invest in a good light, something like a Streamlight TLR-1? These mount on rails. If your gun does not have a Picatinny rail, you will need to install a barrel/magazine clamp onto which you would mount a short rail for the light. Or, Streamlight sells a mag tube rail for this light that just clamps the magazine.

And that adds a lot of weight right at the end area of the barrel and makes what semblance of balance and handling that there might be now non-existent

I disagree. We're talking about 5 oz. right in front of the forend, not the end of the barrel. Most lights are mounted on the Mossberg 500 this way.

Try one of these:

MOSSBERG SHOTGUN TRU-DOT® NIGHT SIGHT

TRITIUM SHOTGUN SIGHT

This is my recommendation as well. A Tritium front bead is relatively cheap, and easy to install. If you do it yourself you may have to file down the threads so that they don't extend into the barrel.

Here is my 590 with the bead glowing in the dark...

And with the bead white in the light...

You'd be surprised just how heavy 5oz can be the further out you go
Again, the weight is not at the "end of the barrel", but in front of the forend and does not create any balance issues at all. That is where lights are usually mounted.

I also went with the Mepro tritium sight but installation was a bit of a pain as the sight would not line up correctly. It was ~100 degrees of to the left. I had to file down a nylon washer to get it to index correctly.

The proper way to do that is to take a little off the bottom of the sight with a needle file until it index's correctly.

You can also drill a small hole in a steel plate for the threaded portion, then lay a piece of 240 black emery paper on the plate and stick the sight screw in the hole.

Then work it back and forth to remove base metal until you get proper fit when tightened.

You are correct. I had given it a try after you had responded in my thread but I was concerned that I was going to take too much off the sight and was seeing little change in the way it fit. I gave it another try last night and decided to keep going until it fit or broke. I had to get it really short and torque it much more than I had wanted to, but it fits now without the washer.

Thanks for your assistance.
