i'm headed up to cali for x-mas and am planning on bring my .38 and my .22 revolver with to do some shooting with my dad. As I understnad these need to be carried in a locked case unloaded, that right?

The firearms must be in the trunk of the car or otherwise least accessible location while driving. Dunno what the specs are on pickups.

I carry mine in a locked Craftsman toolbox with the cleaning equipment and carry the ammo in the traditional milspec can. Technically the firearm can even be in soft cover with padlock.

Also, the firearm can only be carried between places of residence (including motel or legal campground), resident to gun shop or range. Don't stop at malls for shopping on the way or at Taco Bell if it is not on your direct route. In fact you may just want to empty your bladder before entering the state. :D

The letter of the law for vehicle transport is 'unloaded, in a locked container other than the vehicle's glove compartment or center console'.
Locked bag, gunvault, gun case, whatever, whereever.
Ammunition seperate, and for even greater avoidance of legal hassle - no loaded clips / mags / speedloaders. There have been cases filed in CA wherein a loaded magazine carried with its matching weapon have been called a 'loaded' weapon.

And on the 'no stopping' thing - there is some fuzzy language in the poorly-written law that allows 'reasonable detour'. Not something I'd want to argue in court over, though.

Go forth and STUDY the mess that is our body of firemars law - http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/index.html
Or get a copy of 'How to own a Gun & Stay out of Jail (in California)

headed to las angeles to visit the folks, then on to pacifica to visit soem friends, then sacramento for a few more firends and then back to idaho.

On a related note, anybody know of any shooting ranges around monrovia, ca?

Two actually, near Monrovia.

Burro Canyon Shooting Park, 22100 East Fork Road, Azusa.

San Gabriel Valley Gun Club, Duarte, (626)358-9906

Don't have a link handy, but you can call for directions/hours. Get there soon, as the rotten neighbor homeowners are lobbying to shut it down.

Other shooting places in Southern California can be found here:

I have in-laws in Cali. Wife has visted some. I REFUSE to go there! I know it doesn't hurt Cali that I won't come but a fella just has to have some standards! WAAAAY too dangerous to go there without 'prophalactics' of the armament sort!

Good luck to ya!

Strange

In the States where you need a firearm the most for your protection they do everything they can to keep you from having one. :cuss:

Angeles Range is good but it's a bit far for me. I like their layout alot though, and they keep it very clean. Monrovia is the centerpoint to about 4 gun ranges. I prefer Burro Canyon to all others myself, especially on weekdays when there are fewer than 5 people at the range.

The closest range to Monrovia is probably Fish Canyon, but it's a pain. They prohibit just about everything, it costs more, you have to use their targets (no targets besides paper--not even fruits and veggies!) and they have ragged rifle tables that will give you 4" splinters.

That said, the rifle benches at Burro Canyon are a little torn up too but they just recently (recently as in the past 2 weeks) redid the rifle range and pushed it back to 200 yards from 100. I would assume that because of that, they also made new rifle benches since they cut into the parking lot to extend the range. I don't know, I haven't seen new benches but I didn't go to the rifle range, I usually go to the pistol range which maxes out at about 50 yards. The pistol range has NICE, clean benches, with a roof over them, which the rifle range does not.

Ain't it the truth?

**Blink**

OK, San Gabriel Valley Gun Club IS Fish Canyon....4001 Fish Canyon Rd, Duarte, CA 91010. Telephone 626-358-9906.

Thought I had missed something important! :)

Oh yeah, Burro Canyon is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I don't know why, but they are always closed those two days. I think the best days to go are Monday and Thursday.

The midweek closing is for the benefit of the operators.
iirc, there were some 14 'free-range' shooting areas in the Angeles Forest up until the early 90s, then they were all closed on the pretext of being unsafe / toxic / littered. After a period of upset and lobbying, only two were reopened - one in the NW of the county near Santa Clarita (which became 'A Place To Shoot'), one at the Burro Canyon sight it the NE.
They are leased from the BLM, who also gets a cut of the profits. They are shoestring operations, with owner-operator and very limited staff.
'A Place To Shoot' is a nice facility, with covered rifle and pistol ranges, a nice alignment of skeet-shooting positions, and a couple other open pistol revetments.

San Gabriel Valley Gun Range (or Fish Canyon, as regulars like to call it, since it's on Fish Canyon Rd.), is not nearly that bad. No, you can't shoot fruits or veggies, but you can bring steel spinners (minimum 50 yds.). Otherwise, it's paper targets at 50 ft., 25 yds., 50 yds., 100 yds., or 200 yds. No steel ammo (fire hazard for most CA ranges, IINM) and no rapid firing (one shot every two seconds), that's about it. All day admission is, IIRC, $9 on weekdays, $10 on weekends. It's probably +/- $1 compared to other ranges. About half their tables have been replaced with new tabletops (no splinters). Fish Canyon is my favorite range to shoot at. The somewhat stricter adherence to rules makes me feel safer than when I'm at Burro (where pretty much anything goes).

At Burro, I've seen guys go full auto at a bowling pin two yards away (and miss every shot, of course). They think it's fun/funny, I think it's dangerous. No steel ammo at Burro, either. No shade, rickety benches and lawn chairs suck, no clearly marked lanes (lots of crossfire at your targets) with clearly marked distances. But you can shoot fruits, veggies, clay pigeons, bowling pins, golf balls, etc, whether they're yours or not. Restrooms are portable.

Angeles is even more stringent with steel ammo, and they WILL kick you off the range if you're caught (Fish Canyon will give you at least one warning). No fruits or veggies here, either. Only paper or steel. Workers there, not very friendly to begin with, enforce their rules with glee. If you're shooting rifles, their rifle section is nice (although WINDY). Concrete benches w/ metal folding chairs. You can shoot at steel silhouettes up to 600 yds. away. The pistol section has rows of steel spinners set up at 35, 50, and 100 yds. away. Those are fun. You HAVE to sweep up your brass, though, or they'll hold up line break for everyone til you do.

Every range has its pros/cons. I go to Fish Canyon every weekend. It's closest, and the people there are friendly. And they have a burger joint if you're hungry. Hope that helps.

^ ^ ^ ^

That pretty much sums it up. That's why I prefer to go to Burro Canyon when there are few people, because the loners are going to be rickety old men with stories to tell and holes in their paper to envy as opposed to hormone-charged teens with too much energy and not enough common sense.

Saw a grizzly old dude up there last week with a prospector's beard in coveralls shooting flintlocks. Boy was he a character. I bet the guy knows hobo symbols. lol

okay so fish or burro canyon are the places to go then I take it. For handghun shooting which would be preferred? I drove out yesterday, nice drive but online map directions suck. For some reason they routed me though death valley

Anyways i'll be headed out to one of the two on monday, if anyone else on this board feels like burning through some rounds i'd love to meet you. My cell is 208-371-0839

burro canyon on monday, probably around noon

It may be argued that the reason these areas are so dangerous is because of the restrictions on firearms.
