got my garand through the cmp and it is great fun to shoot. i am surprised at how accurate it is. the one problem i am having is it shoots high. at 100 yards it is shooting about 4-5 inches high, with the rear sight cranked all the way down. does anyone know what might be the problem? thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like the front sight is too short. Maybe measure someone else's front sight and see if yours is comparable.

The only other thing I can think of is a stock fit problem, where the stock is pushing up on the barrel as you clamp the trigger group home.

Or, the barrel is not straight. I'm not sure how you would check this. One idea would be to get (borrow?) a cartridge-type laser boresighter and tape a piece of paper over the muzzle. Trace the bore with a pencil. If the dot isn't centered in the tracing, the barrel has to be bent.

Ditto 30cal's plan...

First I would remove the front sight from the gas cylinder and measure it's height (Bottom of dovetail slot to top of post.) with a pair of dial calipers. This will tell the CMP armorers what you have and whether or not they have anything taller to send you.

Just my 2 bits.

I once had a post war SA Garand that consistently shot 12 inches high at 100yards. I had other Garands, so I compared sights, swapped out gas cylinder assemblies with sights, swapped stocks and trigger groups. None of these made any significant change in POI leading me to conclude that it must have been a bent barrel or a problem with the receiver theads being off. I eventually traded it for another rifle rather than sink a lot of money into fixing it. In hindsight, I should have contacted CMP and had them take a look at the rifle as others have suggested to you. Oh well, live and learn.

And in case anyone is wondering, yes...I did disclose the issue to the new owner.

Sounds like you have one that just shoots high. Whether the receiver is slightly out of whack or the barrel doesn't matter. If it is accurate, don't worry about it, compensate in a couple of ways.

1) some rear sight aperatures don't bottom out fully. You may need to grind off some of the bottom of it at an angle. Check the receiver under the cover to see if there are any marks.

2) If you can find a taller front sight, then great. Otherwise, fit a small piece of steel or brass to epoxy to the top of the front sight post.

My philosophy is to always rule out the cheap fixes.

One, the stock must fit correctly. The trigger group must lock in tight enough to prevent the receiver from recoiling within the stock. Also, the barrel channel and hand guards should not be pressing, pulling, or rubbing against the barrel or op rod.

Two, the M1 works best with bullets in the 150-168 grain range. Anything heavier or lighter may cause impact points beyond the adjustment range of the military sights not to mention bending the op rod.

Three, if shooting from a rest, do not rest the rife on any point farther ahead of the upper sling swivel.

Let us know what happens.
