Went to the range today shot my old revolver with poor results.
This is the first time my reloads did not preform. A ton of soot 1 squib primer went bang and powder smoldered bullet logded in the barell. A lil more info ...the primers have discolored in the box dark tarnish. Oh yeah ten rounds at 15 yards looked like buck shot this gun is very accurate. Heres the load data I used.
45 Colt....
Date loaded 22Dec13
Case...cbc
Powder ..Bullseye 6gr
Primer WLP
Trimm 1.275
OAL 1.585
Bullet 185gr fp plated
I usually load 200 to 230gr lead with exellent preformance.
Think what's going on is not enough pressure to seal the case in the chamber due to not enough powder.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanx

Could some sort of oil or lube gooten into the primers or powder? It could be low pressure but that discoloration may be a hint of something else. 6 grains of bullseye should get a bullet out of the barrel.

Seems likely.
However there is very little data for 185 grain in .45 Colt in my library.
People just don't because the sights on fixed sight guns would be so far off with that light a bullet.

However 6.4 is the starting load in .45 ACP.

6.0 is the starting load with a 200 jacketed bullet in .45 Colt.

So, I think you are light in the bigger case.

Just a WAG though.

RC thank you.
As you can see by the date it was the hight of the shortage. Gonna pull the other 50 and do over.

Ouch!!! Lots of hammering. Sounds a Little light to me also. I like to use loads that use propellants that fill the case at max load as these seem to cause less problems overall. One trick to try is to tilt the revolver up before each shot to get the propellant near the primer hole each shot. I have only loaded 230 to 250 grain bullets in 45 Colt due to concerns listed above on a fixed sight revolver. But with the situation of components and cost more are looking outside the box so to say. I have even tried a few unpublished loads/projectiles myself that I would have not bothered with in the past, with mixed results at best.:scrutiny:
