Trouble with auto-loading SKS/detach mag

I have an SKS with a pistol grip and detachable mag mod.
I have a twenty round mag which was pretty reliable, but was damaged due to the "last shot bolt hold open" feature.
Today I went to the range with a new 30 rounder, and nearly every other round slammed under the chamber and "reseated" the 7.62 projectile into something resembling a fat .22. I tossed the rejects with dissapointment.
What is worse, is that I had a new shooter with me whose only firearm experience was this one.( a 10 succesful shot day) and a previous experience where my saiga ak blew up on me. (will explain in next post)
I like the SKS, and it is very accurate, but I do not like being known for faulty weaponry. ANY help is appreciated. :scrutiny:

First, welcome to THR.

Second, this post belongs in the Rifles section.

Third, if you do a search, SKS's don't do well with aftermarket detachable magazines. Some people have good luck with them, but for the most part, they don't work reliably. If you want your SKS to be reliable, reinstall the original ten round mag and learn to load it with stripper clips.

This advice may not be what you want to hear, but I have never been impressed with the reliability of SKS’s with any aftermarket detachable magazine. I have owned a dozen or so SKS’s and fired thousands of rounds thru them and never had a problem using the fixed 10 round mag as made by the Chinese, Russians or Yugoslavs.
Regards,
Jeff

You'll get more shots downrange with a ten rounder and strippers then a 50 round jam-o-matic. If you want a hi-cap SKS look for a SKS-D?. That is the model that uses AK mags.

I know from experience that I can put hundreds of rounds downrange failrly quickly with a 10 rounder.

thanks alot

I would have to take the pistol grip off and change the firing group to put the 10-rounder back on. I might just leave an empty 30 rounder in it and make it a "fireplace hanger."

an SKS is too cool of a rifle to mar with plastic pistol grip addons. Either get an RPK or - if you're lucky enough to find one, A chinese type 68 rifle (SKS style stock with AK type action and ability to take hi cap AK mags.

I just put an original Chi-com 20 round magazine on my Yugo SKS, and it works flawlessly. These are the same 'wedge-style' design as the 10 round, having a coil spring under the arm, instead of the usual detachables' 'box' spring. A freind has a Russian Tula-made SKS and uses the 30 rd. detachables with no problems, except he can't use stripper clips, and of course, the bolt doesn't stay open at the last round. My 20 rounder does, and works fine with stripper clips. :D

Um...fitting a hi-cap mag on a Yugo SKS is illegal. You have to stay with the original fixed 10 rounders or a mag of less then 10 rounds. Got that from the head of the Firearms Technology Branch himself when I wrote and asked about mods to my Yugo SKS. Adding a hi-cap mag to a Yugo SKS is a 922r violation.

Feedrail?

Does anyone know if a feedramp could be installed in front of the chamber?
I know that is a big reason why Saiga can't take mil-surp mags.

I guess most of what has been said allready, stick witht he factory mag, much much better performance. Stripper clips are cheap and plentifull.
