Hi everyone, I just started having problems while shooting my M&P shield 45, the magazine is dropping down a bit while slow firing the pistol. After the recoil of the shot at times not every mag full, you can feel the mag. drop down about a 1/4" with live in round stuck in the chamber.
I'm very use to heavy recoiling revolvers, 44 mag and 357. Two 40SW, Glock and a Sig. also I'm a left handed shooter. The mag. drop happens with all the extra mags. Can't see how I could be pushing the release button after shooting. I don't remember the round count but I'm sure It's not over 200. I've been a had gun shooter for 40 years.
I'm hoping I can get some ideas on what could be going on before calling S&W. I also have the shield in 9mm so I'm comfortable with the design, as well as the45acp round is heavier than 9mm .

I don't know if this is an issue with you or the gun, but Patrick E. Kelley, also a lefty, routinely accidentally releases mags with his trigger finger while shooting. Here he explains it with a SIG P227. If you watch a lot of his videos, you can see him do it with several guns.

You have a defective magazine catch lock that is not fully engaging the magazine's locking notch or a lousy spring in the catch. Send it back or find a good smith.

I have the same problem with my PT111 G2. I stopped using it for EDC because of this. I think for me its just my grip and I'm pressing the release under recoil. Still wont carry it if its going to drop the mag.

I've had two guns drop mags. A Taurus and a Ruger, both purchased new. With both, I spent several months thinking it was me, then finally understood the problem was with the gun. With the Taurus, I modded the mags because I didn't like the idea of the factory putting it back to spec because I felt there was a problem with the design. With the Ruger, I sent it back in because it seemed most (if not all) other people with that gun didn't have that problem. In both cases, the problem went away for good once I addressed the hardware problem and stopped presuming operator error.

Best place to start - go to a S&W forum and see how many other lefties are having the same issue with that gun. If few or none, send it back. I think the OP has too much handgun experience to be a likely source of the problem.

My friend shot his LCP II and kept dropping the mag; I shot it, and did not. He curls his RH thumb under the left, I do not. In his case, he was ejecting the mag with his RH thumb.
