Truck gun on the cheap?

Ok i have a mosin i want planing to use as a truckgun to go with my handgun "ccw" just in case i need a longgun i am dont want to spend a lot of this "over 200" so what would you pick list or what other longgun should i look at

p.s. i like in the country if that helps

I have zero knowledge or experience with a truck gun, but a Mosin seems like a heavy one to be toting around. If you were to need it, the weight may effect your ability to handle it (or may not). It would definitely be in your $200 range, though

If you do go with a Mosin, KEEP THE BAYO ON IT! The BG will think twice about messing with you once you put a 3 foot knife in his face lol

Try to find a bubba'd Mauser. There are lots of old rifles in 7x57 or 8x57 that can be found in the $150 - $200 range. I find the old military Mausers to be more enjoyable to shoot than the Mosin-Nagants but YMWV. 8x57 surplus is still reasonable to find as well.

id have to go for the pump gun. with slugs you could extend the range if you wanted and have some versitility. but the break open would also be just fine.

Look for a cheap sks (I know its pretty hard) or save an extra $100 and get a saiga.

Under $200? A 22 bolt action Marlin or Savage. If you can somehow manage to scrape up some more cash, get a Marlin 336 in 30-30.

I'd pick up an M38 or M44 Mosin. They are both virtually indestructible. They are quite a bit shorter than the 91/30's. I really like my M44.

I'd look for an older shotgun, double barrel or something. Bring some slugs with, and some shotshells, for whatever purpose.

Whats a truck gun lol!!?? There must be some city slickers on here who have never been out in the boonies. I got a marlin 336 30 30 from my work for about 115 no tax (aaahhh the sweet part of working at a gun/pawn shop) and its been under my seat tube loaded nothing in the chamber and i love it for a truck gun. Something comparable would be a sks (id recommend a para but they are kinda high now), a M38 or M44 mosin would work too, or some solid used remmie or mossy pump gun prefer to be a 12 ga but 20 would be fine. For those asking this is a rifle to hunt primarily but makes a great deterrent in rush hour traffic lol

What are you going to use it for? Can't shoot deer in OH with a Rifle and only 3 days can you use a Shotgun. Are you planning to take out varmints? You going to shoot driftwood floating down the Ohio River??

The cheapest reliable centerfire lever gun you can find. Which is probably a Winchester '94 or perhaps a Marlin 336 in .30-30. I would save up a couple bucks for it if I had to, IMO it is better to have a quick repeater in a quick handling chambering for the task that you describe. That will likely require a little more cash, but if you look for a while you a likely to stumble onto a used one for a decent price.

An 870 is as close as I've ever come to a truck gun, but I don't tote it all the time. I'm not sure on what a truck gun is entirely needed to do from person to person (for me it's mostly about bear defense more than anything else) but a shotgun does most anything you could legally need a truck gun to do.

NEF handi-rifle? accurate and powerful enough to do most any task.

also, used shotguns by me can be found for under 200 all day- if you don't mind aesthetically challenged guns, sometimes they can even be found for under 100.

A new marlin 60 can be had for about 180, and they are a great rifle to have at arms reach as well.

Mosins are great truck guns. For security you simply pull the bolt out, which doubles as one heck of a knuckle duster if you grip the shaft with the bolt sticking out between your fingers. Thief breaks in and steals your rifle, you're out a little money and he has a useless piece of wood and steel unless he can headspace a new bolt. More importantly, you won't get shot with your own rifle.

I use an SKS. No they aren't as cheap as they used to be, but for a rifle that can do whatever you need it to for defense, it's still a bargain. I Tapcoed mine and put on Tech-Sights, I'm still under $300, if it gets held onto after a shooting event or by a cop who doesn't know the law, it's not like it's irreplaceable.

I went for the SKS. Accurate, reliable, not worried about it getting beaten up. Though the 7.62x39mm isn't the greatest beyond 300 yards, I really can't see myself wanting to shoot beyond that from my truck.
