I have a Savage 99 in .243 that I am planning on keeping it in my truck, since I work on a farm on the weekend and head up to my Dad's farm as well. I want some info on protecting the finish. I am thinking about the silicone gun sacks inside of a normal padded guncase.
Any good ideas??
Thanks,
Tony

Sounds well protected.

Everybody's got their own definition of truck gun, though. For me, it has to be a beater that's designated to stay in the truck all the time, regardless of whatever else might get loaded up. It also has to be easy to get to (IMHO). By the time I dug through a gun sock and a case, mr. javelina's gonna be long gone.

Mine's a short Win '94 I got on the cheap back in my gunstore days. It's kinda just laying behind the seat.

I love those Savage lever guns, though...one in .243 would be nice.

My brother carries a SKS behind the seat of his farm truck. Cheap ammo and very tough.

I knew a guy who used to keep an SKS in his truck behind the seat in a gun rack meant for the back glass. After spending a few minutes with one of Burnsville's finest explaining that it was in fact illegal, he decided to buy a locking rack, the officers reccomendation...

I would have to second Thumper's take on the truck gun. Model 99s are in pretty high demand, and vehicles get cleaned out by thieves with depressing regularity. Guns in the cab also get jostled, stepped on and may get wet. If they're in plastic without silica gel or some type of vapor protectant, they'll rust up in short order.

A low-end milsurp or SKS may do the job without so much risk. Be careful about laws relating to guns in vehicles where you live. Around here, we used to see a lot of longarms in window racks. Didn't make sense to advertise, and a lot of them got stolen. If put out of view, however, may violate concealed carry laws.

Best bet may be an overhead rack above the sun visors, but I would still recommend an inexpensive gun for this duty.

Well it has to be out of reach, in a fully incasing case that is meant to be a firearm case. Ammo can not be in the case iether.

I really want to buy a cheap bolt action for this, don't have the money right now. Calliber is another consideration. .243 seemed good, with a decent bullet it woud easily dispatch a downed animal (cattle) and would still kill a yote. Might sight it in at longer distance for lighter bullets and just see where it shoots up close with the heavy ones.

I never want any rifle to rust, yet alone my 99. Anyone have a .243 for sale for a $100 with a ??4?? power scope?:D

Tony

SAR 2 in one of those cheap zip up gun rugs under the back bench seat of the SUV. Gotta be careful with rugs. Prone to rust. The sock is a good idea.

NEF Super lite Handi-rifle can be had used for $100 to new $150. I have 2 in my house and they are both tack driver and would not hesitate to get another. I am planning to get some additional barrels if I ever get my Bonus.

I am going to get a 357 barrel because NEF is stopping production of them and a 22 hornet and some day a 45/70, additional barrels are $83.

I wouldn't dare use my M99-R as a truck gun. Too much family history connected with it. It does see use as a bumming-around-gun, but it doesn't live in the car. None of my guns live in the car full time. The chances of something bad happening is too great.

Right now my two bumming-around-guns are a Mosin-Nagant M38 or a Hungarian M44 depending on my mood. The Mosins are reasonably accurate and virtually indestructable. Ammo is dirt cheap. Prices are low enough that I can have a different Mosin for every day of the week.

Truck Gun... to me that means a lever action. The other guns sound good and would work well... but they don't "look" like a truck gun.

Also, a Truck Gun could be a shotgun... especially back east.

Where is the best place to buy a NEF single shot?? I'll look at the usuall spots, gunsamerica, auctionarms, here and such,

Thanks.

Tony

My vote is for an SKS in a gun sock for all the reasons mentioned above.

Well, I found a NEF here for $150 but have not heard back from the guy.
I stoped by the shop and talked with the owner, he recomended the M44.
He also has some SKS's coming in for $125. the M44 would be cheaper, don't know how much though. I don't like how long the standard SKS is, seems damn barrel heavy, or I'm a week one. He has to order in the 44. His flyer said some stocks were cracked, don't realy want to get into that.

Thanks guys.

Tony

Heavy SKS?

Billions of tiny screaming Chinaman carried this rifle, and it's too barrel-heavy for you?! I'm about ashamed to admit we reside in the same state, much less that you work on a farm:eek: Seriously, Go into town down there in Janesville, hit the Fleet Farm, and get yourself a Mosin-Nagant M38 or M44. Fits behind the seat, cheap ammo, plenty of power for those vicious downed cows, (I use a .22!), and you don't need to worry about keeping it pretty looking. Heck, If you get an M44, you could use that wicked side-folding bayonet on the cows, and save ammo! :D

Slice and Dice! KILL, SIR!

;) Hey, I'll tradeja my M38 for your M99 .243, even swap!:D

 :p
Entropy,
I'm going to sit in the corner and cry. I've never even shot one, it's just the way they feel in my hands. Those damn screaming kids couldn't hit much anyway, why else are there still so many of them????:p
I like the idea of theM44, just don't know if I can get used to it, but not planing on shooting it a lot. I never have liked older military rifles of this type, a good old '03 is a diffrent story.

Yes a 22 works good, just above the center line between the eyes, if there still. I have had to shoot a bull, if you wanted to get close enough for your .22, I'd have been right behind you. As it was I took him behind the shoulder, he was a ways off and not liking anyone or anything.

Thanks for the wet noodle wipping, I'm looking for a rag to wipe the tears.

:) Tony

Looks like all litman252 needs is a little push and we have another victim of milsurp madness.
It starts out with just one, a cheap M38 or M44. Then you need one for the other truck. Then you get a C&R license and you are looking for a bigger safe because someone somewhere has a killer deal on a 91/30. Then you decide you really want to hit something so you get a Finnish M-39............... It never stops. Damn milsurps breed like bunnies.

 O. K. litman252, ya got me with the bull. Never had to shoot one, hope I never do. PLEASE, don't put that Savage thru the wringer of being a truck gun. That's the one you'll pass on to the kids. The cheapest I've seen non- milsurp bolt guns is in th 175-250 range for old, beat up Savage 110, or the stevens .30-30 bolt.
I have another little number that would be almost perfect for what you want, but you could buy an M44 and about 2000 rounds for it for what a Kel-Tec Sub2000 9mm costs. I love mine, though!:) They go for about 3 bills, but they are the ultimate in portable, small carbines. They fold in half, fit in about 17" x 6" X 3" , that is very nicely behind the seat.;)
That said, I still think you'd be hard pressed to beat an M38 or 44 for what you want it for. Be warned, however, that Zeke M. is right about them getting under your skin :D

I just ordered some tool boxes for my truck, and then im planning on getting a nef 12 ga single shot, and putting a butt cuff on it. Eventually id like a to add a sks too, but im still debating that one. I figure the single shot shotgun as a backup to my ccw should cover most situations id run into on the east coast.

Am I the only one that has been wronged by wrapping a gun in a silicone cloth?
They hold humidity as effectively as they keep it out.

No. MLC, you're not alone. When I lived in Texas, I didn't take into account the humidity around Dallas, and ended up having to very carefully remove a thin layer of rust from my Dad's pre-64 94 Winchester. I got it back to where it wasn't noticed by my Dad, until I told him. Ironically, the only case that kept a gun from rust was a cheap vinyl one my shotgun was in.
When I worked at a gun shop, a guy brought in a Sack-up with an 870 Express in it that he wanted to sell. It had been in his truck over the winter, and when we pulled it out, it looked like it had been dredged up out the Mississippi. The store wouldn't even make him an offer. I personally offered him $125 for it, but he seemed insulted by that. (they were 189 new back then) Never saw him again.

Short of Cosmoline :D , a light layer of Break-Free checked on every month does the trick for me, on those 'family hierloom' guns I don't shoot regularly. The ones I do shoot, Break-Free lightly every time I shoot, or when the mercury dips to -20, I Gun Scubber 'em and use powdered graphite. I usually only do this to deer hunting and SHTF guns.;)

I have TWO guns that are permanent truck guns:

--A Makarov that is in a cheap nylon holster with a thumb break, attached far enough under the center front seat to be out of casual view, but set so the grip is naturally positioned when I reach under.

--A Romanian AK-47 behind the (second/rear) bench seat that rides in a semi-unzipped "assault" case.

I chose these because I have less than $300 total invested for both guns. Plus the AK can be "unloaded" but have loaded mags ready for quick use.

Being in AZ, I don't have to worry about rust. Not sure what I'll do when I move back to the NW. Throw 8 or 10 bags of dessicant in the truck??

How do you guys like 7.62x54 compared to 7.62x39?
Sp or JHP ammo available for both??? I'd use FMJ for plinking but thinking about shooting in the field, WI does not allow "non-expanding bullets" to be used on game. I don't want to keep bullets in mags/stripper clips that could not be used to shoot a coyote, incase mister officer ever asked what the "assualt" rifle is for.

Just to make sure I look like an idiot, what is a C&R license anyway???
whats the best sight for learing about these old guns anyway???
And the 99 is back in the gunsafe, under a fresh coat of oil.

Thanks much, Tony
