Truck Gun

Once I'm in VT, I'll be able to have a rifle in the truck, along with mags, but still have it unloaded and easy to access. That'll be such a change from MA.

litman252,

I'm usually all about practicality over worhipping anything...but I'll tell ya, I wouldn't use a 99 as a truck gun, unless (perhaps) it had been beat all to hell. You made the right choice. :)

John (who'll get a nice .250 Savage one day...)

tough decision

Choose SKS or AK for handiness, cheap ammo and light recoil (fun to shoot). If you need to make long shots but want a short rifle, the m-38 or m-44 will do but will beller and push you around some. The K-31 is bulky but well made and of course very accurate; 7.5 ammo isn't sold at the gas-and-git, however. The longer MN rifles may cover the most bases.

I just can't bring myself to buy those crude MNs, but lots of people love 'em and the price is right. Do try to get an opportunity to shoot something before you commit to it, if possible. I suspect you'd enjoy shooting the SKS--I do.

The C&R license lets you order these direct from SOG or other wholesalers w/o going through another FFL.

How do you guys like 7.62x54 compared to 7.62x39?
I've never had a x54 rifle, so I don't really have any basis for comparison.

IM(very)HO, the x39 is sufficient for any reasonably anticipated situations, and the AK platform is dependable and accurate enough to handle said imagined situations.

I have 3-30 rounders loaded with Wolf steel core FMJ ready to go, because I don't really believe I'll be out driving around in the AZ desert and get caught completely unaware by a SHTF scenario.

Then again, I have 500 rounds of better-than-decent quality hollow points in the toolbox--just as a wink-n-nod to my paranoia.

At those prices, it's hard to resist the M44 or M38!:) As per comparing the 7.62X39 vs. 7.62X54R, I've shot a LOT of 39 thru various SKS's and AK's, and I've not shot a lot 54R, (I will rectify this situation come spring!:D )
If you were going to shoot a lot with it, I'd say the 39, you can shoot them all day.:) For a truck gun that you will probably shoot to sight in, and maybe a couple times each year, otherwise leaving it behind the seat, The 54R round will do just fine, too. I guess it all comes down to:

From your posts we can conclude:

You don't want to invest a lot. (M44)
Bolt action (M44)
Caliber power for downed cows and coyotes (M44)
FMJ for plinking, SP for hunting available (M44)
No worries about mister ossifer seeing it as an 'assault rifle' (M44)
( Well, maybe the M38 is better here, no bayonet!)
You can guess where I'm headed with this!:D

Glad to hear the Savage is out of the truck, and soaking up some oil.

Thanks much, found a SKS a friend owns, he bought 2 some years back and never shot one, $100- $125. But that 44 is hard to look the other way, except I would have to pay the FFL markup fee.
Thanks much for all the help, I'll check into those sights.
Tony

Ya done good:D For 100 or 125, either way, great deal! BTW, Fleet Farm does have SP ammo in 7.62X39, so your ready to hunt.;) Be sure to build that left arm up some!:p :neener: Seriously, I think you'll find the SKS a joy to shoot, and plinking ammo is so cheap, you'll be able to get lotsa trigger time in.:) Enjoy!

At $39 a pop I think I'd get 5 M44's and keep the best 2 and save the other 3 for gifts for friends.

I've got 2 already, but they love company.

Besides, you're probably not going to see a better price on a funcional full-sized cartrige rifle that will double as a club, weenie roaster or fencepost without making you think twice about it.

Regards,
Rabbit.

The SKS does not have a bayonet on it, seem to ballance quite nice.
$100, damn near feel bad once I looked and see that the China ones seem to be worth some money.
The m44 is still on the want list. By the time I'm done paying the $25 transfer fee, tax, background check and what not it will be near the SKS price. I'm very happy with the price and gun.
I do need some info on it though, I'm very new to SKS's (I did not want one a week ago) I need a place to find all the basic info and dissasembly and what not.
Thanks,
Tony

Basic info on SKS is at simonov.net and surplusrifle.com. I am sure there is a lot more on the net.

Parts, upgrades and inexpensive ammunition are all plentiful.

Happy blasting.
