truly desperate SHTF: eating dog food and drinking fish tank water

Every where you go, you can expect the trots for the first week or 2 and then you beat it.

And you don't have to go far either. I used to think anyone that would pay money for a bottle of water was nuts until I started doing long distance riding. Learned the value of bottled water in a hurry. It's a good bargain! :D

Okay, only one way to find out...

well, i guess there's only one way to find out (and what's a gainesburger?)
....

day 1:
bought:
1 35lb bag of science diet adult orginal formula. yes, it does say that it will keep my coat nice and shiny. (will post pics)

1 28lb bag of Whiskas cat food. original formula and shape.

the experiment:

well, i don't really know how this is going ot go, but I'm going to eat one big tablespoon of dog food right now. i'm going to wash it down with only 1 cup of water.

i've mortared and pestled this using a granite m/p to prevent bone fragments. I also mortared 1 tbsp rice as well since humans need a lot more carbos from grains than dogs do.

wish me luck. if i don't get sick before this time tomorrow night, i'll consider it a success. it's 12:52am right now...

Dogfood I'd eat. Actually the jerky treats aren't bad, though they need more salt. :D

Water I don't really worry about too much. I have a creek behind my house, A lake in my town, Several retention ponds on my street, and one of the world's largest sources of fresh water 15 miles down the road. Only problem is purifying it.

and how about carrying a slingshot for SD/hunting?

Sounds good to me. Plenty powerful enough to get a bird, a squirrel, or a rabbit. Trapping such animals would take even less time and energy however, a book on improvised traps might serve you better.

I though that the Eisenhower administration mandated that dog & cat food had to be safe for humans to eat.

Bon appetit....

Knew a guy a while back that used to work as an 'ice road' trucker in the Canadian arctic. (This was years ago, pro'lly prior to MREs.) He said it was SOP to keep several cans of the best-quality dog food he could find in the rig, as more palatable food (Spam, vienna sausages - ick - , sardines, whatever) would be eaten when you were merely hungry, rather than being saved for a true emergency. If it tasted *too* good, it was liable to be eaten and then not replaced 'til you got 'round tuit'... which was always too late....

Bon appetit

That is the most sensible thing that has come out of this tread. Psychological warfare between impulse control and "live in the moment."

Id venture a guess that the water in your fishtank is going to be a bit higher in amonia that one would generally prefer, not sure if that would kill you or not.
A properly cycled and maintained tank will have 0 detectable ammonia, and not much nitrites or nitrates. I have to regularly dose mine with nitrates to keep the plants happy. I'd still filter and dose the water with some chlorine before drinking it though.
and what's a gainesburger?
It was a form of dog food prepped and packaged to look like a patty of raw hamburger. I don't think they are made anymore.

Found this on a Lab board.
Gainsburgers... *SHUDDER* lets not go back there! "semi-moist" foods (IMO) are the worst possible choice! They are loaded with sugar and preservatives to keep them "meaty"

Check out Purina® brand Moist & Meaty Chopped Burger:

Ingredients Beef, high fructose corn syrup, soybean grits, soybean flour, water, wheat flour, corn syrup, calcium carbonate, brewers condensed solubles, phosphoric acid, salt, sorbic acid (added to prevent spoilage), calcium propionate (added to prevent spoilage), DL-Methionine, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), ethoxyquin (a preservative), added color (Red 40), riboflavin supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, calcium pantothenate, copper sulfate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, pyridoxine hydrochloride, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

Hmmm...I have some raw food cat/ferret diet made from chicken and rabbit.that the cats refused to eat, even cooked (yes, I tried that). I wonder how it would turn out as jerky?

I used to (vaguely) know a few bush pilots, and to a man they all carried a big ol' bag of Cat Chow in the back of the plane in case they were ever brought down and stranded for a while somewhere.... The story was that since cats are true carnivores, their diets are much higher in protein than dogs and as a result cat food would keep 'em going far longer than any other non-perishable food source.

Interesting thread, I was just thinking about this a few days ago when I was at the store with my family buying stuff.

We picked up some food for our animals and while I was in the isle I thought about what if we had a situation like NO, and looters hit this store all the real food would probably be taken first but what about the dog and cat foods would probably be left on the shelves a bit longer.

If you need fresh water to drink, there is plenty even in NO right now

Look for a hot water heater, a normal size one holds 40 gallons of stored water, pretty much every house and building has one.

Safe availible water to drink.

A friend of mine has a contract to raise and deliver corn to a dog food factory near here (by the semi-load).

He says the standards for dog food are higher than those for human consumption.

It all depends how long the water has been in there. Water in those tanks can develop organisms over time if they are not flushed regularly.
Hot water heating systems too. It is free of air/oxygen so there are no organisms. It may be rusty and taste stale as all get out though and while that won't kill you filtering it would be the better choice. I used to have some friends that thought the opitime of coolness was to eat dog food. They prefered Gravy Train IIRC. :barf:

Hot water heaters are hooked into the water supply. The moment that sewage backs up through that water supply, the heater becomes contaminated. The rule of thumb regarding hot-water heaters is to unhook them BEFORE the hurricane.

Masterblaster, I read 39 posts before you got it right!

I was sitting here thinking, "Is no one going to say to drink from the water heater?" In a pinch, if the room was flooded, you could even hook up a hose to it, and suck the water out.
Dirty contaminated water, no high tech filter? Everyone should have a bottle of cheap bleach in their SHTF supplies to kill nasties in water! I beleive 8 drops of bleach will treat a whole gallon of water. This will kill everything dead. For those who say "it's just a little diarhea." Are you nuts, the first five people reported to die today in N.O., died of disyntary. Do you remember when Tony Mandrich "The Great Bust" the Former Green Bay Packer got Giardia? He was 300 lbs plus, and lost 40 lbs! Rainwater is okay, snow runoff is okay, lake, stream, or pond water is filled with bird poo, fish poo, and dead Moose parts. (You can substitute Mice, Deer, or Dog for the Moose depending where you live. :D )
Just remember, you can go a long time with no food, but without water, your body does not work. (If it is freezing cold, you will require food/carbs to keep alive, water alone will not sustain you for too long)

Fish tank water? Only after treatment.
Dog food? Maybe. Cheap cat chunk tuna cat food? Done it.

Filters - 1 micron certified against cysts to address protozoans like crypto and giardia, reverse osmosis works as well

Bleach and iodine- won't touch crypto and giardia

Alcohol doesn't do anything in water (except make for a watery cocktail)

Boil for 1 minute minimum to kill everything

Chemicals are only handled with charcoal or reverse osmosis

Delhi Belly is different from serious diarrhea that will accelerate dehydration.

To heck with the dog food and fish water, bring your dog over and we'll eat him and drink the water out of the toilet tanks. Its a better plan.

does anyone know what sort of shelf life those water cooler jugs have? a few of those on hand could really help out, but I know I would never use them unless I had to... do they ever actually expire?

well, im ok

i'm ok after eating a tablespoon of science diet dry dog food.

tasted kinda.. well... bleah. not bad, just bleah. i'd say that more than anything, it seems greasy, like a cookie made from margerine.

now to try two tablespoons.

anyone done this before? i really hope i'm not going to wind up with internal bleeding... ah, this is what teachers do when they ahve two months off...

Eating Dog Food & Drinking Fish Tank Water

I've stayed in that motel. It's just west of San Angelo, TX. Back then, it was a dry county, so we were happy with whatever mood-altering substances we could get.

Most Western Civilization suburban tummies can not handle "slightly"
contaminated water. You will get diarrhea and crap yourself to death.
Drinking more of the same contaminated water won't help. This is some
bad stuff when it gets started.

Add a purifier and a camelbak to your kit before you add another firearm,
crate of ammo, or stack of mags.

Yes, boiling is great. A small aluminum camping pot can also be part
of your kit.
