Trump: '8-year assault' on Second Amendment is over

it is amazing to think that gun owners have to fight a never ending fight to keep a right stated in the bill of rights. does that happen with the right to free speech? I guess you forgot about the rampant vote fraud in big cities. one big city can dictate laws to the rest of the state. To me the NRA thrives on people introducing anti gun bills it drives up money for them. and money is all any one cares about regardless of speeches they make

In recent years, the answer is yes, it does happen with free speech. Search Google for net neutrality.

I'd encourage all Illinois members to go to the NRA-ILA "Take Action" site and sign up, they make it easy to contact your legislators for/against good/bad Bills. You don't even have to be an NRA member as far as I can tell. Go to the State drop down box and choose Illinois. I looked at it, y'all have got a lot of work to do!

I'd encourage all Illinois members to move, I did.

The problem is the bill isn't getting the right committee sponsors to progress; that is specifically where a motivated president or Speaker can move things along if they care to...

I’m glad to see not everyone on here is blindly loyal to the NRA. While I am a member of the NRA, and pay my yearly dues and typically add a little extra as long as funds allow, I’m sick of their “sky is falling” attitudes. I get more junk mail and spam from them than anyone else.

While I sympathized with the doom and gloom message we got from them for the past 8 years (although it was often way over the top), now that we've won, it's the time to go on the offensive. Instead, the NRA is digging in their heels and content that they stopped further attacks against the 2nd Amendment. Why aren’t they sending out flyers today for us all to call and email our legislators to support the HPA? They sure didn’t have a problem doing that when they wanted to shoot Obamacare down, I got tons of junk snail and email through that ordeal.

I’m glad to have to NRA fighting in my corner. But that doesn’t mean I have to be happy with their methods.

Nice rhetoric. What has actually changed?

Well, since Justice Gorsuch's attitude towards the Second Amendment, to the extent revealed during his confirmation hearings, was about the same as Justice Scalia whom he replaced, what effect will his appointment have on the court overall and with respect to its approach to the Second Amendment, in particular?

"No longer will federal agencies be coming after law-abiding gun owners. No longer will the government be trying to undermine your rights and freedoms as Americans," Trump said during his speech to the National Rifle Association in Atlanta.

That's nice that Trump believes the feds have been coming after my guns but I haven't seen any feds around my house. Haven't heard of any instances where that has happened either. Just exactly what is he talking about? Sounds like a bunch of fear mongering to me.

The real problem is states that want to regulate your ability to purchase and own. Haven't seen the NRA spending any money to combat the likes of Bloomberg and the big spenders that dump millions to get state bills and initiatives passed. The NRA is MIA on that front.

I still pay my dues but all I get is more gun control coming at the state level. Someone needs to clue Trump and the NRA in about where the regulation is actually coming from.

How about another Justice like this would that have been better? Which would have made 5 Justices that think along these same lines. What has he done, you got to be kidding me.

In an appearance on PBS’s “Charlie Rose: The Week” last Friday, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer waxed philosophical on the Second Amendment, arguing—with a straight face—that the Second Amendment doesn’t protect your individual right to own a gun to protect yourself in your own home.

With smug self-assurance, the proud and haughty jurist not only misquoted —slightly—the text of the Second Amendment, but also said that in his opinion, the constitutional provision merely prevents Congress from disbanding state militias, which, he concluded with a flourish, “is not the right of an individual to keep a gun next to his bed.”

I'll wait to see if anything actually gets done.

Even if nothing were to get done, he will likely veto instead of sign anti-gun bills in general. And remember, most of us didn't elect him because we thought he was Charlton Heston reincarnated, rather that he would not be a direct enemy to our Rights as Hillary would have been.

Actually the NRA regularly does take up those state and local issues.

That's great. They need to get involved at the state and city level. That's where the action is.

They didn't do anything for us here in WA when I-594 was voted on. 10 million was spent here by AG supporters, a few hundred thou by NRA. It wasn't that important to them. They just pulled out and let us go under.

You can't win a fight if you're always on defense but better than nothing I guess.

Maybe now that the GOP controls congress they can look at the local issues more.

I actually read an interesting article that explains why the NRA doesn't take up every fight. The example being used was the DC vs. Heller case. The NRA actually fought AGAINST the case making it to the Supreme Court, because they thought that the makeup of justices at the time would lean towards ruling in favor of the District of Columbia so they'd lose the case.

I'm betting since it was an election, the NRA realized that no matter how much money they dumped on advertising, that the state leans left enough that the election results would be the same regardless.

That's probably true. There sure were a lot of NRA supporters here who felt they had been abandoned. Personally I understand the logic but it's still hard to take because it's in your own backyard. It happened in OR also. No support against a UBC bill there either. The NRA is spending some money in CA now (even more AG than OR or WA). I think they saw a huge decrease in membership after they abandoned OR and WA a few years ago. The only reason I'm a member is because it's a requirement at my private gun club. I've had far more support from the Second Amendment Foundation here locally and I support them without reservation.

It would be nice if it's true, I hope it is (the OP). But since a decentralized govt is a conservative mantra, we are still at the mercy of state's rights on this issue. The next time I move, which will be retirement, this is one (of several) issues I will keep in mind.

Many gun owners don't like the NRA because they ask for money BUT they never say anything when they get an e-mail everyday from their political party demanding $$$$$
Really? I'm sad to hear that. They seem the same as pretty much any other org. that needs to do fund-raising to move forward in their goals. I dont see them as any more or less intrusive.

That's simply not true. A prime example was stepping away from the pack and strongly supporting Trump. The NRA really put its back into it and we're just now seeing the payback.
Yes, while there were so called republicans in Congress and elsewhere trying to shoot Trump down the whole way.

There is a hard run now against free speech. If they can shut down the "fake" news websites etc, they can remove Trump, and any effective dissent would be quashed. They are not going to try and impeach him because that would mean a public showdown of facts which would work against them. They will try to overturn the election itself claiming this absurd "Russian interference" thing. They could use that to unseat Republican Congressman etc as well. There would be no debate, and a gutted Fox News, CNN etc would feed the public what they want.

Personally, I have never been a fan of Trump, and I'm from NY and have seen him in action for years, as a typical NY uninformed loud mouth lib. I did, however, vote for him because the only proven Constitutional Conservative in the race lost the primary to him. I'd vote for a cockroach vs Hitlery. I believe he loves this Country, but he's so devoid of ideology, understanding of the founding and basic free market economics, I'm still concerned. Without the right ideology to guide his decision making processes, the truth is, you will never know what you will get until it happens. As gun owners and supporters of 2A, we should all be on our guard.

Where's the overturn of Obamacare...had the chance, didn't happen, because he put it in the hands of Paul RINO.
Where's our Wall...also, didn't happen. He had the chance in the recent fully bloated spending bill...
Where the draining swamp? He's surrounded himself with NY Liberals and Bush people, not to mention Paul RINO and others.

I don't expect miracles overnight, but I do expect concerted action towards his campaign promises...

So far, the best thing he did was Gorsuch on the Supreme Court... very happy about that, but still waiting to see how he adjudicates to be sure.

Basically, he's a Populist and that is never a good thing. I pray for him and hope he will do better in the coming years.

His greatest obstacle right now is that he has allowed the wrong people to remain and surround him in the WH, and not firing Comey as soon as he took his hand off the bible.

He is spending too much time defending himself, and not using what is in the palm of his hand - the JD and the FBI. With Sessions and a loyal FBI head NOT on the lists presented to him, he could cut loose with an aggressive investigation into the death of Seth Rich, Pizzagate, the Clinton foundation, the IRS, et al. There is plenty of scope there to bring on some rapid indictments that will not only destroy the Democratic Party, but probably take down a lot of others too.
