Trunk Guns: What kind of case and what supplies?

Of my trunk guns only one is in the trunk. A scoped loaded SKS in a soft case with extra ammo.
My pickup rifle is a loaded M1 Carbine hanging behind the seat with extra ammo.
The station wagon rifle is a loaded folding stock M1 Carbine on the floor behind the front seat where I can reach it from the driver's seat, with extra ammo in the back.

I carry an 870 20 ga with XX buckshot in the back of the wagon.
One of my friends (6'2"ish, big tough guy with very strong hands from his line of work) keeps a Mossberg 500 with front and rear pistol grips, no buttstock, under the seat of his pickup truck. He keeps it loaded with buckshot, I think its at 8 rounds with an empty chamber.
He's had enough spare time and ammo to practice that he can hold the shotty by the foreward grip, toss two clays into the air with his strong hand, grab the rear grip and proceed to nail both clays before they hit the ground. I'm not too fond of that trick for all the muzzle waving, but he only does it when he's alone at the trap line. He extends it out in front of him at eye level, he doesnt fire from the waist.
Suffice to say, I think if his late 80s pickup doesnt work to get him out of there or as a self-defense weapon, that shotty should definitely help him out a bit as he knows how to use it.

I normally carry my shottie empty, six rounds of 00 buck in the sidesaddle, nestled in a cheapie hard case. That still probably counts as "loaded" in California (I'll have to ask wifey). Also have a soft nylon case (looks sorta like a shaving kit) full of 00 and slugs. When I put it all back in, I might make it cruiser ready, depending on the laws. Cleaning? Who cleans a pump shotgun?

AG -- Yup, shells in a sidesaddle count as 'loaded' here in the good ol' PRK. Shells in the same case as the weapon are probably in a gray area, as the definition of 'attached' will probably be determined by the level of ambition of the local DA...

Ak 47 with 1 30 round mag loaded inside a soft case, along with 3 other 30 rounders loaded and 1, 75 round drum ina little gym bag looped through one of the handles of the soft case with a girth hitch. also an 870 inside a blanket roll.

What about the maintanance of the truck gun?
Aren't they prone to rusting easier sitting in the vehicle 24/7?
Is there anything special you should do for this?

I have an ancient Winchester 94 carbine that lives in my truck. No extra's, just the gun and a belt of shells with it, and a bag with about 75 more rounds nearby. Around here there isn't much need to do any real maintainence. Besides, This old Arizona ranch gun looked like it hadn't had ANY maintainence for 30 or 40 years when I got it. I cleaned it up good, so it should be good for another 30 or 40 years. I do run a patch thru it once a year or so tho.
I just keep it in a saddle scabbard, magazine loaded, chamber empty.

Mine have been in the vehicles 24/7 for years with no problems except very seldom a little spot of rust when I've gone way too long without checking them.
No real problem since your truck gun probably isn't the prize of your collection.
If you check them once in a while and have them in a dry place in the vehicle it's not much different than having them in the house.
If you live in a pretty humid area you might wipe them down lightly with Corrosion X every few months.

No real problem since your truck gun probably isn't the prize of your collection.
If you check them once in a while and have them in a dry place in the vehicle it's not much different than having them in the house.

I keep my in a Whaller locking gun bag. Mini 14 with spare magazines. Magazines not in the rifle as that is not legal in NH.
Mastinson, I keep it loaded with handloads. I use the Hornaday 170 gr bullets mostly, they seem to shoot better groups in my guns. I don't think I've bought any factory 30/30 loads for ,......maybe 25 or so years. If you don't load, then keep your eye out for the sales that Wal-Mart or K-mart or whatever have in the fall during hunting season. Seems like you can get 30/30 rounds for about $8 to $10 bucks a box at those times.
Most guys I've heard comment on 30/30 ammo seem to like Winchester best.
I have drilled a hole under the buttplate and put a spare firing pin in on a couple of guns, but the Winchesters seem to be pretty reliable if not dry-fired. I may do this to a couple more of my guns tho, just cheap insurance to have it with the gun.

Since I don't have a gun in my truck you guys have me thinking about it now.
Got me thinking too. I purchased a Mosin Carbine with this in mind a couple of months ago, but have never actually put it in the trunk. Anyone from PA out there who can tell me about any legal issues with trunk guns in Pennsylvania. I know that you can transport firearms & ammo stored separately to the range, but have never read anything concerning the long term storage of rifles & ammo in the trunk. Would this fall under the catagory of a cocealed weapon, & if so would a PA carry permit cover this? I'm going from memory, but don't the PA permits make reference to "firearms" not just handguns?

Trunk of my squad car (personally assigned, I drive it home with me): Bushy AR and a Mini-14 (Bushy is mine, the Mini is the department's.) Both are kept with a 30/20 rd mag in the rifle, unchambered, with extra mags in the soft case. Extra AR mags (6) in my Tac Vest which is also in the trunk.
Trunk of my car: Bushy A2 20" with a 10rd mag in the rifle, unchambered. Rifle is in a soft case. 3X30rd mags, 4X40rd mags, and a South African 300rd battle pack. Oh, and a handgun in the console.
Trunk of my Expedition: no rifle or shotty. No place to conceal a long-gun. Handgun is in the console.
This works for me.
