Been looking in local pawns and gunsshopsfor last few months, and what they have are overpriced and generally needs rebuilt. Total trash with pitting, busted stocks, gouged bores and so on. The new rifles always are marked a few hundred over what I see online for same new model. And most shops here act like letting you look at the new ones is a waste of their time. So I haven't had a chance to handle and compare the new ones locally. I am frustrated last week I had $1,000 in my pocket and was brushed off without being able to look at more than 2 rifles to compare. One was a used Remington 700($680) that had gashes in bore the other a new savage axis ($790). The axis was to slippery and way to short .
So in the $1000 or less ballpark what's your guys' favorite? This area has elk, deer, black bear, javelina hunts all of which I plan to do. I am looking for a solid trouble free build not prone to jams and pretty accurate from the factory. Most of my experience on centerfire rifles have been 30-06 or 30-30. I want a .308 now unless a good deal in .270 or 30-06 comes up.
