Theirs just no such thing as a happy medium when it comes to things like this. If you’re too nice, stuff gets blown up. If you crack the whip, you piss people off. It's just really hard to keep everyone happy. You got the higher ups on one side of you yelling at you to enforce the rules and regs they pass down and on the other side you have a commuter that feels that those rules are BS.
One of the biggest problems with TSA is that the supposed rules are secret. They claim that screeners have complete discretion ... which means that even if you read the rules on the TSA web site, a screener can make up more when you get to the airport.

And if you ask to see where it says in the rules that screeners have complete discretion, they won't show you because THAT's secret as well.

The TSA is a classic example of the inmates running the asylum.
