Tucson City Counsil passed some bs legislation for reporting stolen guns and for blood alcohol testing if found shooting within city limits.
Lucky it was preempted by state law, and the AG tore them a new one.
My proposed thank you letter to the 2 Councilman follows. If you think it's a waste of time please let me know:
I'm sorry to hear through media outlets that you were in favor of increased gun control. I am pleased that your attempts to create legislation were stopped as they should have, due to the State's preemption over localities trying to enact these ordinances. In Arizona we don't have a patchwork of laws for citizens to navigate through. No matter where you live or visit in our great state you know the laws are the same.
Let me explain, I am all for safety and security. However this is not the way to do it. Focusing your efforts on enabling those in need of mental health services and committing those that are a danger to themselves and others is the best way to effect safety in your community. I worked in Tucson for behavioral health, I know from experience that funding and access to these services is abysmal. When Jared Loughner killed 6 people, he had been removed from Pima Community College for acting erradic and having bizzare behavior, and he was addicted to drugs. A law that stipulated that a lost or stolen gun be reported would have had no effect on stopping this from happening.
When you create legislation, please be aware that this puts a burden on the law abiding citizen, not on the criminal where efforts should focus. ALL studies have shown that more citizens with firearms equals a drop in crime rates. If you know this why push for more regulation making it harder for people to own and keep firearms? Are you for violent crime?
