I've mentioned my Erma .22 rimfire conversion for the K98k Mauser in previous postings.
I may have already shared the short video of me firing it through my 7.92x57 Turkish Mauser rifle using high velocity Remington Golden Bullets:
Note that I kept checking the bolt at first -- the handle looks like it's resting higher than it should when locked shut, but that's just the way Erma designed it. Golden Bullets have a mild report, but they still produce a supersonic crack.
Anyway, this Wednesday I tried something silly, combining this rig with CCI subsonics, both traditional CB Longs and one of their Quiet offerings.
Hooboy, is this thing ever quiet! Even my air rifles make more noise.
The K98k-length .22 insert barrel stops about 6" short of the muzzle in the long Turk, so the extra freebore may contribute something to the effect. Certainly it puts the muzzle a long way from the shooter's ears!
Every shot sounds like a primer-only squib with a sore throat. The staff on the other side of the glass partition couldn't hear it at all.
Frankly, I would have half-expected to find each bullet still lodged in the barrel without the target as proof they had gone downrange.
Oh, and the recoil of a 40 grain subsonic bullet from a service rifle weighing over 9 lbs. is also highly giggle-worthy. I gotta do this again!
