What Tom could resist this foxy lady sitting on a fence post? They all did yesterday.

See this funky pond water? Trust me, not water I'd normally drink. Had a bit of a "tint" to it. But I forgot to throw my extra water bottles in the pack and all I had was my Boy Scout canteen! DANG! And I very rarely forget stuff. Water is terrible stuff to forget.

Having my trusty cook-kit with me at all times for coffee, (actually have three different kits, but I like this one best) I figured I could at least fill the pot full, boil it, and chug it down to hydrate, get at least that one full pot of water in me. I had four fuel tabs with me, which was enough to bring it to a rolling/roiling boil. Take THAT elk, moose and deer poop and pee! I bet Coyote himself peed in it too, revenge for when I used to kill coyotes. Possible Eagle flew over and pooped in it too. I just don't know. Usually, one fuel tab will make me one cup of coffee, so four tabs at once really boiled it good. To make the boiled pee, I mean pond water more palatable, I threw in some creamer, fake sugar, and one packet of instant coffee, and a chunk of 100% chocolate (no suger). Wasn't bad at all, just kind of weak as far as coffee goes.

And so, I was able to short-ration the water in the canteen to last the whole day. No Turkey action at all, so me and Bess pretty much did this all day, when not hiking the five or so miles from favorite spot to favorite spots. Hike-sit-call, hike-sit-call, etc. Enjoyable day for sure, better than staying home and doing chores, and doing things that "need to be done". :)

Bessie and the Boy Scout Canteen say: "thanks for listening"!

Yep, that's about like my typical Turkey hunting day.
Then there is my buddy who gets one with 9" beard and 1" spurs as soon as he gets set up, then has two more just as big he literally has to beat off his decoy so he could take it home.

There's days when I've had them come in so fast that I hardly had time to shuck my pack and try to hide, or just sit down, other times I'd hear a far off gobble, and it would be there to bust me putting up a decoy. This season so far, I only had that one stay out at 100 yards and refuse to come closer. !!! I really wonder what's going on with them this year. I have not heard one single gobble, and I've been out four of five times, and spent the whole day in the woods each time.

Oh yeah, here's my strange pond-water brew after it was done, looks good eh? It really wasn't bad, but I keep having this urge to howl like a coyote. What's up with that??

"Worst day fishing still beats best day working" in my book and I am sure the same applies for turkey hunting.

I am sure it was still better than first generation MREs (Meals Rejected by Everyone) I had to eat in the 80s. :D

Take my word ... Even cardboard tasted better than what they called "pork patty". And don't ask me how I know what cardboard tastes like.:eek::rofl:

Although not a turkey hunter, I follow Bamaranger on TFL - and at lunch, we are local.

"I track him in the scope, trying to get his head/neck centered, and avoid a rather inconvenient screen of saplings between us. He changes his angle slightly, nearly dead away, and I trip a shot......the bird flushes and flies away. frown.gif .

A sapling about the thickness of a broomstick, 2-3 feet off the muzzle, unseen till that moment, flops over dramatically, cleanly shot in half! Maybe I ain't such a hot turkey hunter after all?"

Now that's funny, maybe I missed the first generation, but I absolutely LOVE mre's. !!! The enchilada being the best! I don't remember Pork Patty, but I never met a MRE I didn't like, or couldn't eat. And MRE crackers...I'd crawl 100 yards over broken beer bottles for MRE crackers. But now I'm on a no-sugar, minimum carb diet, so no more MRE's. And I still have a case of them. (having a son who's First Sergeant in the Army comes in handy!) But I think your opinion is in the majority. I worked in a prison for years, and loved prison food, and also in a Mental Hospital, (worked! NOT committed!) and I liked that cooking too. But most people wouldn't like institutional food. !!! I have strange taste I guess. :)
