I was thinking about sending off my exceptional CZ SP-01 to Turnbull to do a bluing,.......maybe even doing a case hardening to the frame. Has anyone sent a pistol off to them? What is the general cost [ballpark figure]?

I was quoted $1400 to do a revolver. That was with a nearly new USFA Rodeo.

If you are just doing a blue job send it somewhere else that doesnt have a year wait list.

fordsguns.com These folks do the finishes for Cimarron Arms. Very nice.

I received a PM from a member who led me to a link which explains why CZ products are not a good choice for blueing, so I will not be doing it. Again, thanks everyone.

I'd love to see that link, if you are good to release it. I'm more interested in nitriding and hard chrome in terms of finishes, but I'm always interested in learning more.

I was wondering that myself. Not sure if the frame is carbon steel or stainless under that paint.

I'm not sure if I am allowed to post a link to another forum.

Basically, the metal on a CZ 75 had a lot of very tiny "pit marks" on the metal. The gunsmith thought it may be why they seem to come with a relatively thick coat of black on them.

They used to have a blued finish as an option. I have a blued 85. From a few feet away though, I can't tell it apart from his polycoat brothers. Your money, your choice.

They dont come with a painted surface because they have a porous surface. They come with a painted surface because thats what they come with by design. If the gun was designed to have a high polish blued surface they would have made the gun to accept a high polish blued finish from the beginning and they would have adusted the price point up.

FWIW the CZ-75's you could buy in Europe in the mid 80's had a wide variety of finished from high polish blue to gold plated. It was the widest variety of new model gun finishes I have ever seen. We just got the flat painted finish in the US because thats what the importer ordered. The CZ-75 I bought at Frankonia in Darmstadt Germany in 1987 had a high polish blued finish. Paid $425 for it . Sold it for $900 right after I got back stateside.

This is the sort of stuff you can buy in Europe today. that the US importers dont bother with..

Thanks for the link. Kind of like the look of the color case hardened frame but not at that price.
