A couple of weeks ago I picked up some 270 brass form a shooter at the range who didn't reload. I was going to srcap it but I desided to try and make 7mm08 brass.

After annealing, the process was rather easily done other than having to trim. I was rather pleased with the outcome! The brass weighed 186grns and IS the most consistant brass I own. Most of my other brass is around 160 with lots of variation.

I know I have decreased volume and increased neck thickness and a dummy round chambers fine, but it is a bit tight in the throat.

My question is: Will I need to turn the necks or will it fire as is with no issue? Also will a slower, lower pressure powder with a light 130grn bullet work best in the inital load?

The 270 is based on the 30-06 case and the rim thickness is 0.049 inches. The 7-08 is based on the 308 case and the rim thickness is 0.054 inches. You can use a 308 case to form 7-08 cases but you will have trouble using a 30-06case to form 7-08 brass.

measure the neck of a 7mm loaded round that started life with a 7 mm case and compare it with one that was made from the 270 formed case. if they are the same then you don't have to turn the neck.

Yes, the neck is .321 and the other ammo I've loaded is around .313. It chambers snug. I may need to turn it a bit. I'm a little worried. I would like to see how it shoots and take advantage of the thick brass.

Since there is 15percent more brass should I use 15 percent less powder on my inital load?

it wouldn't hurt to turn the necks a little bit and yes you will have to work up a different load for the brass formed from the 270 brass. that is a problem when you have to do too much forming to make a case. in this case I wouldn't have done it. I would keep the load you use for the original 7 mm brass and come up with a totally different load for the formed brass.

I assume you meant "tight in the neck" not the throat. This is worrisome, to me. This could mean higher pressures.

Gloob: Yes, the neck.

I turned all my necks last night and polished them with 000steel wool. I then measured the loaded neck dimention at .317. After marking and chambering the necks I see no radial scuffs around the necks.

15percent less case capacity will increase pressure. Will 45grns of Re17 and 130SieMK's do it?

you will have to low and work back up. most manuals say if you change components to back off 10 to 20 %. since you say there is a change in case weight I would back off 20% and work back up
