Hello everybody.

Since this is my first post here and I do not want you to think I am simply doing a drive by spam, I think I will take a moment to explain why I am posting the link I intend to post here.

I recently had to turn in a gun, I had owned for a number of years, because I found out it may have been stolen (turns out it was). Anyway, I've been watching the search terms that brought views to my blog about turning in a stolen gun and then reviewed other SE (Search Engine) results which lead me to this board. Since I had searched on my own before turning the gun in and had not found many resources that discussed the positive side of this, I think it's a good idea to add to the community here by sharing my story.

I've also taken a moment to add a link to THR on my site as we are all about sharing information.

I'm glad I found this board and I'll be adding it to my usual Internet rounds. ;)

How To: Turning in a Stolen Gun

WELCOME TO THE FORUM...... If I knew I had a stolen gun I would feel obligated to turn it in. I sure wouldn't risk getting caught with it. It's a shame you lose your investment. That's better then doing time to no fault of your own.

I have a few guns I haven't checked numbers on. I'm sure they are okay but you never know. Years ago I had a cop neighbor and he ran several for me and they all came up clean. He did tell me if one came up stolen I would have to turn it in.

Another time I was cutting grass and on the side of the house I found a old nickel plated 38spl Rossi. Not thinking I picked it up. Called the cops and they came and got it. I'm sure it was used in a robbery around the corner at a store that was always getting robbed.Apparently he was hiding in my shrubs either lost it there or left it there to come back later. The cop told me in 6 months if no one claims it I could get it from them. I told him I had no use for that POS. I never heard anymore about it. It's better to be safe then sorry.

Thanks for the warm welcome. :)

Unfortunately the gun I had to forfeit was a Sig P228, not a Rossi. :( I'd say the chances of me getting it back are 0.

On the other hand, someone who lost that gun may be getting it back now, and will probably appreciate the good care you took care of it. Karma has a way of coming back around, sir.

Absolutely. Truth be told, the gun was in better shape when I turned it in than it was when I got it.

I tried turning in the magazine too but they didn't want that so maybe I can recover a couple bucks by selling the mag....But wait, I know it's stolen too so that would be selling stolen property. ;)

That would be hard turning in a Sig but it's still not worth getting caught with a stolen gun. You did the right thing as hard as it was to do. They told you to keep the magazines and there's no S/N on them so I would sell it and get a few of your dollars back.
I doubt you would ever be called about it since it was stolen.

How's everything in Vegas? We were there Sept 06 and Oct last year. It's to hot for me.I don't know how you stand that heat.
We loved The Fremont Street Experience. I hope to go back another time.It sure is a neat town if you gamble or not.

I can handle the heat with the help from my pool and the 3 giant A/C units on my roof. It's the $600-$700 power bills that I could do without.

There are a number of great shooting locations here though including a sick new shooting park that is run by the county. I'm not going to drop another link here but if you type "park" into the search box on my site, you will find a nice writeup and pics of it. You should check it out the next time you're in town.

the few times i have bought a gun, i meet them FTF in some areea that has people around me. i write down the license plate number before i get out of my vehicle. if my wife is not with me i call her the plate number before i open my door. one cannot be too careful meeting strangers. i log each down each gun with all info---date, time, place, etc. i have not purchased a stolden gun, but i would have the info if i did!

702 Shooter, No my friend the pool sounds good but you can keep those power bills. Since Nevada doesn't honor our permits I don't take a gun with me out to Vegas. With all the cops out there I sure wouldn't chance carrying. I can think of better places then Clark Co jail house. We saw several people cuffed and stuffed.

I'll check that shooting park you mentioned out.

Not sure how you feel about open carry but it's perfectly legal in Las Vegas. I open carry most days.

As far as CCW goes, I don't know where you are but do the permits from any of your surrounding states also cover NV? Final option is to take a CCW class and apply for a permit the next time you're here. That permit will extend the states your covered in so you can get more use out of it than just Vegas.

Can a non resident open carry? I have a FL NR permit and a NC permit. Last time I looked they weren't honored. I just looked again and neither of mine are honored in NV.
Even if they did it wouldn't be legal in casino's.

I didn't know that you can legally carry in Casinos. I used to live near Tunica MS the mini Vegas and there were signs everywhere no weapons allowed. I guess I assume it was the same in Vegas.

I never saw anyone open carrying, live and learn. I appreciate the info.

So what's the downside (besides losing the gun) to buying a gun that you later discover is stolen. If I didn't know it was stolen, I haven't committed a crime. There's no burden of proof on me to determine the legal status of every FTF transaction I make in life.

Possession of stolen property if you get caught. Doesn't matter if you knew it or not. The item was in your control.

I would guess that the vast majority of FTF gun buyers have no way of knowing if the gun in question was stolen, or not. Ignorance is bliss? Maybe............

Since you suspected it was in fact stolen, you did the right thing. My condolences.
