Hello all, hope you are doing well.
I wanted to report on a couple of holsters that I purchased in the last few weeks just to add to the valuable THR holster experience database.
After a recent purchase of a Springfield loaded 1911 ( a whole other thread, I love that thing) I decided I needed a suitable holster to haul it around in. I struggled for quite a while trying to decide between leather or kydex, but eventually decided on the kydex for a few reasons.
1) I like the draw in a kydex holster. It's quick out and locks in positively. I've just spent more time with them.
2) There isn't the kind of waiting period for a good kydex piece as there is with good leather. This is entirely understandable, but I'm an impatient man when it comes to getting to wear a new weapon.
3) Summers in KY get a little hot and sweaty, and I'm a sweater. Not the fuzzy, warm kind, the gross, wet kind. Not good for leather in the long term.
That decided, I looked at a lot of makers from FIST to Blade-Tech, and eventually chose the Comp-Tac C-TAC. This thing was a great IWB holster by the looks of things, and extremely thin. It also allowed the added bonus of being 'tuckable' if needed. It also looked like the most stable and flexible of the bunch, allowing for some movement of the person without much shift in the gun.
About that time I noticed a fellow on THR selling a used C-TAC and dbl mag pouch (Solo17, a great guy to deal with by the way) and snatched it up. After getting it and wearing it a bit, I can say that it's definitely a top-of-the-line kydex piece. This is extremely thin and easy to hide. A t-shirt would do it, even on my thin frame (6'3", 170 #), though it does necesitate a 4:00 carry position. Retention is great (and adjustable) and it's ultra-stable. I love it. Very comfortable for long days, even driving.
To make a long post longer, I also picked up another IWB holster while discussing different holster makes at my gun shop. They mostly deal in DeSantis holsters there and happened to have one of their Scorpion models in. It's rigidly formed, but with a curve, and two hooks at each end. A big bonus on this one is that it will hold either my Glock 33 or 17, if I am in the mood. It was only about $35, well worth it for a holster allowing me to forgoe unhooking my belt if I have to step into a no-carry area.
It's fairly comfortable for a while so long as you aren't sitting for too long. This may be largely personal since I don't carry at 3:00, which I would imagine would be much more comfy. The retention on this is also great, as is the draw. Simply due to the price, this is a good holster to buy if you're in need of something quick for just running out the door for a little bit. If you're going to have it on all day, cough up the dough for a C-Tac. They are very, very worth it.
I hope that this helps somebody if they needed a little extra nudge to buy either of these holsters.
