I'm not one to abandon the men and who fought for the freedom we now have. I don't speak German for a reason....

The enter system will need a overhaul. It's not something solvable overnight, but if it's not address fairly soon, then entire system will die, and everybody will get NOTHING.

I'm 28, and I expect $0 from SSI.

No where in my post did I suggest that. The youngest WWII vet is in their seventies, the youngest korean war vet is past retirement age anyway. They wouldn't get abandoned at all.

I've actually calcuated..

What I've paid thus far in social security, if I didn't pay another red cent, assuming I invested it in an Index Fund, yielding 7% annum, compounded, when I am 55, and I converted it all to an annuity, I will get about $800 a month. So even if I didn't pay anymore, privatized, I'd make more than SSI offered to me, than if I paid another 20+ years...

atek, didn't mean that you suggested it. Just stating my position. I'm a loyalist, not like Klinton..

My buddy's in the army right now, in Afg. He's an aerospace engineer. I'd put him in charge of VA retirement fund. Him + his HP calculator + 40 hours = a good vet's retirement plan.
 
c_yeager, I personally find "responsible smoker" to be an oxymoron as well... But if we've learned something from history, it's that prohibition doesn't work.

prohibiting plants, guns, beverages, consensual behavior between adults etc. Doesn't work.

prohibiting murder, rape, thievery aka crimes with "victims" does work.

Big difference.
