I will be coming down to TX in Sept for a pig hunt. I understand that I need to buy a 3 or a 5 day license to hunt. My ? I am a resident of Kansas and can't seem to find my hunter education card. Heck I am a hunter ed instructor but anyway will I run into problems not having it or should I just get a replacement of order? Thanks for any help.

If you were born on or after Sept. 2nd 1971 you will need a recognized hunter safety course certification card.

So, if you can not find yours....then yes...get a duplicate/replacement.

We look forward to having you in our fair State and hope you will have a great (and safe) time while you are here.

Flint.

5 day....non resident license:

Non-resident 5-Day Special Hunting (Type 157): $48
Legal for any period of 5 consecutive days (valid hunting dates will be printed on the license when issued). Valid to hunt: Exotic animals, all legal game birds (except turkeys), all nongame animals, squirrel, javelina and alligator (not valid for other game animals, NOT VALID FOR DEER). Stamp endorsement requirements apply.

Nothing I can add to what Flint said. Except what part of TX. are you hunting? Because tactics vary. No matter where you hunt, take the "Bluebelle" approach; "Eat what you can, and KILL the rest" Happy Hunting...chas

I will be hunting Sweet Water Creek Ranch in Decauter TX. I have a group of five buddies that have gone there twice a year for the past several years. They keep asking me to go so what the heck.

So whats the hold up?

Get your Jayhawk butt down here and help us kill some hogs! :D

Stopped by Wildlife and Parks this morning and got a new card. So I should be set to help with your hog problem.

Okay jbkebert, so about right now I suspect y'all are out and having a great time. How many so far?

Not there yet we leave Sept 21st and come back on the 27th. The only fun I am having right now is throwing hay. I think we are the only people who still put up small square bales.

Nope, just loaded, hauled and stacked 500 bales last week. Hopefully, there will be some round bales available soon. We are just now getting the rain we normally have back in June, so we were lucky to find some square bales.

Ended up with right around 4100 bales. My shoulders should be strong enough to pull my bow now.:D

I'll be headed to TX in Sept to knock down some Doves with a college buddy. Hoping to reduce the hog population at the same time. I would be picking up the $48 permit except for one little thing. I'll be back down in December for Deer. So my permit cost jumped.

So please leave a hog or two for me.

Well we head down Wednesday how is the weather outlook. Anything I need to know about? I am under the assumption that roughly 10-3 will be the most productive times to hunt. Although I will probably be out dawn till dusk at least a couple days. Ultimate goal is a Red Stag and a couple hogs but would be prefectly happy with a sitka or fallow deer and a couple hogs.

The only time I've caught hogs 10-3 is when I go into the cedars looking for them and I stand up a sleeping pig. Hogs lay up during the day. Dawn and dusk are when you are most likely to catch them moving... unless you have a light set up, then you can catch them 10p to 3a.

Good luck.

Kill 'em all, let the vultures sort 'em out.

I guess I figure 10-3 might be a good time frame for the hard horned critters to be venturing. I have never hunted a full moon in TX before. This tatic seems to work in Kansas at least. How have temps been in the area?

Good strategy for fall weather....but since it is still hot here...look for movement the first 3 hours of daylight, again about noon to 2 p.m., then the last two hours in the evening.

The rest of the day....most everything is "shaded up".

.
Same effect as anywhere else, there is a tendency for animals to take advantage of the additional light....and to feed more at night than under dark conditions, but thats not a hard and fast rule.

Yes, the premise being that animals have fed at night and will then get up and move later in the morning than usual. There is some truth to that....but keep in mind the driving factor here is heat (this time of year).

How have temps been in the area?
Depending upon where you are in the State, mid/late Sept. temps will yield High 60's/Low 70's for overnight lows, warming quickly to the 90's (possibly upper) for daytime highs, once the sun starts to set temps fall 10-12 degrees quickly.

Just be mindful of the wind during your hunt and keep in mind that rising temps create updraft thermals and evening temps create thermals that settle (can get you busted in draws and low spots).

Good luck guys, hope you have a great time.

Flint.
