FORT WORTH - A would-be robber who was pistol-whipped with his own gun and clubbed on the head with a champagne bottle at an Arlington liquor store is believed to be the same man responsible for about a dozen convenience store heists in east Fort Worth, police said.

The man, who was emptying a safe when a clerk began his surprise attack, fled empty-handed, bloody and probably with a headache, police said.

Arlington police Detective Danny Nutt said a man wearing a ski mask and blue rubber gloves and carrying a gun walked into Paradise Liquor, 5915 W. Pioneer Parkway, the night of March 15 and forced two employees to open a safe in the back office.

Nutt said the robber had placed his pistol on the floor and was filling a bag with money from the safe when the owner grabbed the gun and began pistol-whipping the robber. As the robber and owner struggled over the gun, it fell to the floor and broke, Nutt said.

"The owner then picked up a champagne bottle and whacked him over the head several times," Nutt said.

The robber fled, leaving behind the money, broken gun, ski mask and part of the gloves that had been ripped off in the scuffle.

Another witness reported seeing the man leave in an older-model white Chevrolet pickup.

"He was injured," Nutt said. "We recovered a large amount of blood on the scene."

On Friday, Fort Worth police released a surveillance photograph taken during the March 12 robbery of the Texaco at 6801 John T. White Road. The store had been targeted by the robber four times previously, police said.

In almost all the robberies, police said, the man walks in with a ski mask concealing his face and brandishing a gun. He frequently takes cash or the entire register tray before fleeing on foot.

In one of the robberies, the Feb. 13 heist of the Texaco at 5401 Sun Valley Drive, the robber fired at a witness who tried to follow him in his truck. The bullet struck the witness's truck.

The robber is described as African-American, in his late 20s to early 30s, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, and 155 to 180 pounds. The robber wears latex gloves, conceals his face with a dark ski mask and carried a blue steel semiautomatic pistol, police said.

In some of the earlier robberies, police said, the robber wore a white surgical mask in lieu of the ski mask.

The man probably has visible head injuries from the Arlington robbery, police said.

Anyone with information about the robber's identity is asked to call the Fort Worth police robbery unit at (817) 877-8316 or Arlington Police Department at (817) 459-5304.

The gun broke? Musta been a Glock..... :p

I thought the incident with the guy killing himself while pistol whipping the dog would have taught people. Don't pistol whip anything with a loaded weapon. Empty the magazine, preferably into the BG, and THEN pistol whip. Glad it turned out for the best.
