I have recently acquired a type 99 rifle and was wondering about the thumb nob safety, when I engage the safety by pushing the thumb nob in and rotating it, it works like it should, pull trigger, nada, nothing, but when I disengage the nob the rifle fires automatically  My question, is this normal for a type 99 rifle or is there something wrong with the safety on mine:rolleyes:

NO, it should not fire when the safety is taken off.

Press the trigger foreword with your hand and see if it does it then?
If not?

Take the action out of the stock and check for binding stock wood pressing against the trigger or sear.

Or a trigger & sear gummed up with dried grease.

I will check out and clean any risidue that I find and if the wood is binding against the receiver, thanks guys :)

yep that is definitely not normal. I agree with RC that something may be gummed up. also you may dissassemble the bolt and clean it real good and put it back together, not nearly as complicated as most other bolts from that era.

The Type 99 bolt is fortunately easy to disassemble. Basically put the front of the bolt on carpet, push down hard on the bolt knob, and rotate it. I can't recall the correct direction off the top of my head, though. I do remember that's what I did when I replaced the bolt back on my late grandfather's Type 99. That was over 10 years ago, though. The bolt design is a simple striker held back by the trigger sear. Once you remove the bolt back, the spring and striker just slide out.

I'm going to guess it's counter clockwise off the top of my head, the first time I took my arisakas out my brother somehow managed to dissassemble the bolt while in operation lol.
