What are the types of bullets? For example TMJ, FMJ, SWC, JHP are some that I've seen and I'm sure there is more but not sure what they mean or what the difference is.

There are lots. They aren't always consistant between MFG either. Here's a good link for info that someone posted on a similar thread http://ammoguide.com/

Here are a few. You can piece together some of the variations from these basics:
Materials:
J Jacketted
L Lead
C Copper
P Plated
FMJ Full Metal Jacket (usually exposed lead base)
TMJ Total Metal Jacket (no exposed lead)

Shapes:
WC Wad Cutter
SWC Semi Wad Cutter
FP Flat Point
RN Round Nose
HP Hollow Point
HB Hollow Base
TC Truncated Cone
BT Boat Tail
BB Bevel Base
SP Soft Point
S Spitzer

and many many more.

xj,

You need to read a book on loading. A good one to start with is the Speer Manual #13. The beginning of the book is very educational. Last part of the book contains loading data which you would use if and when you load your own ammo.

Or you can go to your local public library and check out "The ABCs of Loading" which is somewhat informative, but not worth owning.

Also check the web for bullet companies — there are many of them. They often have lots of info about their products.
