It is well known that Winchester 231 is the same powder as Hodgdon HP38. (I've seen that stated many times in numerous places...)

Herein lies the problem --
Looking at load data for 44 Magnum in Richard Lee's "Second Edition of Modern Reloading", I see some discrepancies. For instance, for a 240 gr lead bullet, the starting load for 231 is shown as 10.2 gr, where the HP38 starting charge is 5.5 grains. For a 210 gr jacketed bullet, 231 shows to be 10.8 gr to start, while HP38 is 7.5 grains. I welcome any comments regarding these numbers... Thanks! :D

Lee's stuff is a compilation from many sources. It would be astonishing if they did match.

BINGO! While Lee's books can be very informative and Lee has done a wonderful job of making affordable equipment, his loading data leaves much to be desired. Absolutely none of it comes from his own testing, as far as I know. Im sure its safe, though, or he wouldnt be publishing it.

Anything printed from Lee should be taken with a grain of salt and considered carefully. Their instructions for their products are notorious for being lame. I consider their loading date to be "guidelines", most likely dictated by teams of lawyers to CYA.

In some cases, it is some of the hotter published data. 357 mag for example shows 158gr lead bullets with 15.3gr of 2400. That has to be about a grain heavier than most other sources.

Thanks for the replies, guys. You can be sure that I don't take any source by itself to be "gospel" in reloading data. When I'm working on a starting charge weight, I always consult at least three sources. Better safe than sorry... ;)

From what I gather when Hodgdon took over, HP-38 and W231 became the same, so I'm guessin HP-38 was originally the faster powder ? So which powder are we loading now ?
Quite a few people here have ask Hodgdon about this and where told they are the same.
I guess there is load data out there from before and after

Well, Hodgdon doesn't make 'em either, they just distribute them. Those powders and many others we know and love are made by St. Mark's Powder Co., so I hear.
