I have seen some sellers of the Desert Eagle say the last of the Israeli made ones have been shipped and the rest will be made here in USA.

The seller's make it sound like the US made DEs will not be as good. I know they do that so some chump pays more for the gun on sale, but does anyone have any info on this? Are they changing the gun in anyway (I think the current one is a Mark XIX)?

I believe the guns are being manufactured in Brainerd, MN. If you go to MR's website and look at the 2010 catalog you will see the difference. The top rail is re-designed and has 8 slots vs 2. The gun will remain a Mark XIX. Earlier Desert Eagles were made in the US and I don't believe there were any problems with those so I wouldn't worry about the quality of the new pistols.

A side note perhaps but I have to wonder at what the DE's are used for. I can see them as a fun gun for giggles at the range and perhaps for literally blowing away the competition at a bowling pin match but other than this do these heavies actually have a purpose in life as some sort of backwoods grizzly or polar bear gun? I sure as heck can't see packing one in a CCW IWB holster.... :D

They are fun at the range as you have stated. As many times as I have been to the range with my 6 handguns, the only gun that I've actually had people ask kindly if they could shoot is the Eagle. It also is a very accurate pistol and does make a fine hunting platform. Especially with the 10" barrel.

I own a Mark I 44MAG DE (Made in Israel), Don't know if the American made ones would be of equal quality but I certainly don't see why they wouldn't be. I'd take an American-made give the option 9 times out of ten (the tenth being a Korth Revolver).

As for the mission of the DE, it's a end of the day Big Bang gun. Load her up with some hot 180 JHP's and blast away.

Only thing more impressive in 44MAG is a snubby revolver with the same loads :D usually gets you some dirty looks from your next-door neighbour shooting bay and a quick visit from the range officer to see if the rounds are too hot for the backstop

A side note perhaps but I have to wonder at what the DE's are used for.

They were originally designed in the late 70s/early 80s to provide a competitive semi-auto option for silhouette shooting, which then promptly plummeted in popularity.

Even if a hoard of zombies came over the hill, my DE would not be a go to gun ;)

However, if launching 8 rounds of 44MAG down range in spectacular fashion is called for or pin-shooting, it's my hand cannon of choice.

I think a lot of the "hate" out there is from using dirty/unkept range guns and the wrong ammo (which can turn the DE into a Jamm-o-matic piece of crappola). Range guns are a poor reflection of a firearms potential. Even had a Ruger Super Redhawk that was unlocking the cylinder with weak-a** Blaser steel cased 44 rounds :(

For what it's designed to do, the DE is head of the class IMHO but as a EDC or service sidearm you'd have to be out of your mind . . . in a good way.

The DE was good enough for Vic Mackey...

I love the Desert Eagle... the .44 mag is affordable and turns every head at the range. On top of that, the 10" Barrel version is amazingly accurate!... Love this gun

A DE is like buying a Vette, who really needs 500hp...who really needs .50AE.

They make a lot of noise and look cool, how much more of a reason do you need?:D

Heck yeah!!!!

If I had the disposable income, I would buy one for no other reason than just to have it.
