As my addiction is growing....I gotta have one of these!!!

Uberti seems to be one of the best quality clones out there but how do they shoot, accuracy wise?

Thanks!

1851 Navy Fan Club!

I have an 1851 Navy by Uberti and it's the most accurate of any of my cap and ball guns. The first black powder c&b I ever shot was my Dad's 1861 Navy. You will be surprised and pleased I'm thinking. I put five out of six shots in the rings, one handed at 25 yards out of the box. I can't usually do that two handed with my .44's.

Fit and finish of the Uberti Navy are very nice like most Uberti guns (I still had to tinker a bit as I do with all my cap and balls though). I do have to say, I have four .44 cap and ball pistols (Uberti's - Rem 58 NMA, 2nd Model Dragoon, 1 Pietta 1860 Army, 1 Colt 2nd gen. 1860 Army) and while I love the big bore .44 and the noise and smoke, they don't compare to the accuracy of that .36.

I LOVE my 51 Navy. :)

So yeah, go on and get one! Just do be aware that the Colt's shoot high up close and you will be able to adjust and do just fine! Practice, practice, practice!

There used to be a snub nose BP in Cabelas but I see they no longer have it. Any idea where I can get one?

snub nose.... you mean like this?

I was shooting it the other day and the while loading, the palm piece on the brass loader sheared off - it had come unscrewed a bit and I didn't realize it - this weakend it enough to allow it to break. I'm going to repair it by drilling a hole through the top and into the top of the laoder stem and then tapping it for a 10-32 screw. Should work fine. Otherwise, I think they make replacements - I know that I've seen them listed somewhere.

Its a fun shooter no doubt. You will have a hard time finding one for sale.

well

I just fixed the loading tool - was easier and turned out better than I thought it would. Looks like it was made the way it is.

For anyone that doesn't have a Brownell's No. 2 Drill and Tap kit, I strongly suggest that you get one - I use mine many times a year, every year - for stuff just like this!

Saved me the expense of a new loading tool. :D

Thanks for bringing that up heckyeah!

Oh, and you could buy a new barrel and have it shortened and the front sight installed - but that'll cost too.

OOPS - Sorry - didn't mean to hijack the thread.

I also have a Uberti 1851 and love it. I will say that this is the first cap and ball that I've purchased that didn't function right out of the box. I've had to work on it some - the hammer spring was too weak and the nipples too big for #10s and too little for #11's - but from what I've read here, this is something that is affecting one batch. I would buy another Uberti in a heartbeat - this is my 3rd one.

Here is a pic of my 1851:

I think I've got the issues worked out now - but I have a new set of nipples on the way just in case I didn't get it.

I can tell you that even with the troubles, I can tell it's accurate.

All the originals were shortened with various saws. Make one the old fashioned way.

I cut my barrel to three inches and after using it that way for a while, decided to add a front sight. I dovetailed a rifle sight I had left over from some project and filed it to approximate height and a Sourdough profile. A couple of more sessions at the targets and it will be right where I need it.

For point shooting, all the silver on the end of the barrel is easy to see.

For aimed fire it is pretty good also.

Attached are a few photos of my latest.

Pretty rig and by Gaw!
What a front sight, you aren't going to lose that one fer sure. Somewhere I saw a picture of an original that was cut off About a 1/4 inch past the wedge and it had the original front sight on it. Just enough bbl to use the wedge to hold it onto the frame. It was a wierd looking Navel Destroyer (Belly Gun).

Sorry about bringing this thread from the dead but I finally got around to buying one. The possible shop was the only place I could find that had one in stock, $256.

I should have it in a few days but in the mean time can someone share some load data; ie. max load and what size ball it likes?

Thanks!
Brent
